Welsh rugby fan cuts off testicles after win
LONDON (Reuters) - A Welsh rugby fan cut off his own testicles to celebrate Wales beating England at rugby, the Daily Mirror has reported.
Geoff Huish, 26, was so convinced England would win Saturday's match he told fellow drinkers at a social club, "If Wales win I'll cut my balls off", the paper said on Tuesday.
Friends at the club in Caerphilly, south Wales, thought he was joking.
But after the game Huish went home, severed his testicles with a knife, and walked 200 metres back to the bar with the testicles to show the shocked drinkers what he had done.
Huish was taken to hospital where he remained in a seriously ill condition, the paper said. Police told the paper he had a history of mental problems.
Wales's 11-9 victory over England at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff was their first home win in 12 years.

The latest news is in from the Creative Arts At The Octagon group.




From Tuesday 22nd February to Saturday 27th March
Yeovil Camera Club
The Annual Yeovil Cameral Club Exhibition 2005. Probably one of the oldest clubs in Yeovil, formed in 1937...it has continued until the present day, developing from black and white images only, to colour, and now well into the electronic age with digital images.

Wednesday 30th March to Saturday 30th April
David Brooke and Caroline Ireland
An exhibition by two Artists with original, distinctive styles, who produce imaginative paintings and drawings that convey a sense of wonder and mystery. David Brooke's paintings create the feeling of myth, although often they are not based on any specific legend. Caroline Ireland works using pastel and watercolour together to produce brilliant, vibrant effects.

All exhibitions are open Mondays to Saturdays from 12noon to the end of each evening's Theatre performance or 5pm if there is no evening performance.

The Octagon Cafe is now open for coffees, teas and light snacks from 12noon on Mondays to Saturdays, as well as for evening pre-performance meals. The Octagon has access for the disabled by means of a lift to the first floor Gallery. All exhibitions are organised by the Yeovil Community Arts Association.

Music For Africa - New Web Site

The new Music For Africa web site came on line today. If you click the title above it will take you there.

Christine Newton, who is coordinator for the charity has spent HOURS at her PC learning from scratch how to build a website. We think she has done a sterling job and Tom Toomey who heads up the charity is very proud of the site.

The new site has some nice pictures of the 2004 MFA event held at Montacute House and details of the planned 2005 concerts to be held in July.

Please take time to check out the site and enjoy. In February Tom will be officially opening the three new classrooms that the people of Yeovil (and elsewhere) have so generously provided.

Booking Opens Today for Historic Music Festival Celebrating the 1300th Anniversary of Sherborne Abbey in Dorset

One of Britain’s oldest abbeys will celebrate its 1300th anniversary this year in May.

Sherborne Abbey in Dorset will commemorate the event with a celebrity music festival running for 5 days from 20th – 24th May 2005.

Included in this year’s festival will be a special reconstruction of Admiral Lord Nelson’s Funeral Service with the Bandsmen of the Royal Marines. There will be performances of Bach’s B Minor Mass and Handel’s Messiah, both with soprano Emma Kirkby. The European Union Chamber Orchestra will feature violinist Tasmin Little. The festival will close on 24th May with a song recital by one of Britain’s greatest singers, Rosalind Plowright.

John Baker, who started the first festival in 2000, says, “It has taken us 5 years to reach this point which would never have been possible without the previous experience we gained, the anniversary itself and the willingness of local business and people to sponsor and support the event.”

Sort of an interesting contrast in the news today.
Last night we learnt that Home Office would no longer detain in prison, foreign nationals who they suspect of terrorism, because this detention has been ruled by the Law Lords as being discriminatory. Instead anyone suspected of terrorist intentions can held under house arrest without a trial, oh and this includes you and me as well, otherwise it would still be discriminatory.

Just to make this clear, if the Home Secretary thinks you are a terrorist, you can be held under house arrest indefinitely. There is no trial and there is no right for you to see the evidence against you.

Do you trust a politician enough to give him that amount of power?

Today is also Holocaust Memerial day and the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. It's worth remembering that the Nazis who created 'The Final Solution', were voted in to power by well meaning people who failed to hold their Government to account.

We should never let a Government take powers, where those powers can not be restricted or tested by a court of law; the history lessons are clear.

Off topic police state madness!

We found the following news item on the Yahoo web site, the reporting is courtesy of Reuters:

Cops use plane to nab apple-eating driver
LONDON (Reuters) - Police called in a spotter plane, helicopter and video-equipped patrol car to help convict a woman who ate an apple while driving to work, newspapers have reported.
After nine court hearings and a trial lasting more than two hours, nursery nurse Sarah McCaffery was fined 60 pounds on Monday when a court upheld a police decision to give her a penalty ticket.
Police used the plane, helicopter and car to film road conditions on the route she took in Tyneside, northeast England, after officers pulled her over in December 2003.
"It is a joke they put so much effort into this," McCaffery, 23, told the Sun newspaper on Tuesday. "You would think they had better things to do."
She said she had both hands on the wheel of her Ford Ka and was driving safely.
But police and public prosecutors said she was not in control and they were obliged to gather evidence when she chose to fight the fine in court.

Now, how is it that the police can marshal this level of resource to nab an apple eating driver and yet routinely fail to investigate bag snatches and similar crimes. Where does this leave the rest of us? If you are holding a cigarette whilst driving will you now be deemed to be not in control of the car? Will scratching your ear or putting on your sunglasses be seen as not being in control of your car?

This level of craziness is incredible and demostrates just how far down we have gone. If you ever had any doubts about whether we lived in a totalitarian police state then this will surely have shattered them.

Sunday, not that musical actually!

A quiet Sunday at home with the papers? A walk in the hills whilst the sun is shining? Whatever makes your perfect day we hope you enjoy it. Musically it's a quiet day (unless you're in Church of course).

Some great news over night from the concert (in Cardiff) organised in aid of the Asian Tsunami Disaster Relief Fund; it has raised £1.2Million and the event could have been sold out three times over according to the organisers. Even after a few weeks has passed, the pictures from Indonesia still defy description and the death toll continues to rise. If you can give any amount of money at all then please help those whose need is great.

Look out!
It seems highly likely that we will all soon be paying more for our drinks on a night out. The combination of higher licence fees from the council and now the prospect of Landlords paying for extra policing can surely only mean pricier drinks.

The move to 24 hour licensing is soon to be with us and it will be interesting to see if this results in less binge drinking (as the Government thinks), or people getting plastered 24 hours a day.

X-Teller 2nd album launch party

Already February is fast approching and with it brings the X-Teller Album Launch Party to celebrate the completion of their follow up to 'Between These Lives'. Those of you who visit the X-Teller site regularly will have already seen a preview of the album artwork for 'Run On The Rooftops', happily the rest of the artwork is now complete and they await the CD master ready for production.

The album's launch party will be held on Tuesday 22nd Feb at the Quicksilver Mail, Yeovil. Doors open from 6:30pm and the party kicks off at 7:30pm with the Wizard Strobe show taking us up to 9pm. X-Teller will then take the stage to perform tracks from the album, a few new songs and some favourites for good measure. After that the party will continue till late with Wizard. Entry will be free all night to everyone and there will be advanced copies of the album available to buy on the night.

In the meantime, they will playing at Stars Lane in Yeovil on Friday 28th instead of the 27th by request of the venue and they are playing tonight at The Porter Cellar Bar in Bath.

According to research Psychologist Dr Cliff Arnalls, the most miserable day of the most depressing month of the year is just a week away.

He has come up with a formula pinpointing Monday, January 24 as the gloomiest day of all. The Cardiff University expert weighed up the influence of a number of January-specific phenomena that ruin our mood. He blamed miserable weather, mounting debt, the length of time since Christmas and failed New Year's resolutions for the depressing day.

The factors are compounded by a lack of motivation in the face of a need to take action. For those wishing to examine their woe further, the formula is [W+(D-d)]xTQ MxNA. It translates as weather (W), debt (D) (minus the amount of money to be paid on your next pay day) and the time (T) since Christmas.Then there is the period since the failure to quit (Q) a bad habit along with general motivational (M) levels and the need to take action (NA) to plan something to look forward to.

Sounds great doesn't it? Just so you are ready there is no live music that night apart from an open mike night at the Westgate in Taunton; perhaps he's right!

Tsunami Disaster Benefit folk night

A charity gig night is being held at Somerset College of Art & Technology (SCAT) in Wellington Road, Taunton, entrance adjacent to main entrance. The charity event happens on Wednesday 19th January and runs from 7.30 - 11pm.

Local guitar man, Tom Toomey will be playing at 10.30 in this event.

Get yourself there and help raise money for those who literally have nothing.

From today, Monday 17th till the 22nd, the Swan Theatre in Yeovil is hosting a performance of Shirley Valentine, the play by Willy Russell.



The Plot
Shirley Bradshaw is a rather ordinary middle-aged Liverpool housewife. On the outside this 40 something mother of two spends her time talking to her kitchen wall while she prepares her husband’s chips-and-egg supper. She ruminates on what has happened to her life and sips a glass of wine, dreaming of drinking it in a country where the grape is grown. On the inside she is Shirley Valentine, longing for an opportunity for adventure and a change of life. That opportunity comes along in the form of a two-week holiday in Greece, courtesy of her best friend. Shirley packs her bag and heads for the sun. Without breathing a word to her husband, she leaves a note on the kitchen table – "Gone to Greece. Back in two weeks". And so begins Shirley’s journey. Experiencing a totally different lifestyle as she encounters the problems of a being a woman on her own - or, rather, the problems others have encountering a woman alone – her social and sexual identities unravel as we begin to see Shirley Valentine emerge.

Off topic: Recent reading

In our recent travels from here to there and back again, we allowed ourselves to splurge some hard won dosh in the airport bookshop. The book below is one of those we ended up with; THE MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS by Jon Ronson.




This book purports to tell the (true) story of how some high placed people in the USA military came to believe in some very odd things (staring at goats with a view to killing them is just one example). What is even stranger is that many of these odd beliefs have been acted upon recently; for example in the treatment of prisoners in Iraq.

The book is a great read and if even half of it is true then the US government is far wierder than you would ever guess. It seriously makes us wonder what happens here in the UK.

It talks about American Generals attempting (and failing) to walk through walls, levitate and burst the heart of animals from a distance. Very, very strange!

Check it out at your bookshop; the ISBN is 0-33043526-4 and it should cost you £10.99. All you conspiracy theorists will love it!

Well we are back from our various travels and so you can expect more regular updates here on the blog site.

Have you seen the picture of Prince Harry in the Nazi uniform? Have you heard the commotion it has caused? We all know (well most of us know), that the Nazis ran an evil regime but surely the point of a fancy dress costume is not to glorify the figure, but make fun of it. If you go to a fancy dress party as Hitler, Saddam Hussein or even Tony Blair it is to poke fun at people who have been defeated in some way. (Of course the verdict may still be open on Mr Blair.)

Yes it was a stupid thing to do, but surely all those people saying it was an evil should apply themselves to erradicating the real evil in the world; there is plenty of that to work on. Or perhaps that's just too much like hard work...

Band practice space needed in Yeovil

We received the following plea from Richard Oborne, the drummer in a young new band. As you can read below, they desperately need to find some practice space. If you can help then please send an email to suit_boot@yahoo.co.uk and help a new band get started.

I am in a 4 piece rock band that has loads of ideas, but nowhere to practice!

We are all 15 and 16 and all students at either Bucklersmead Comunity school or Yeovil college but we have had no success in finding somewhere to practice in Yeovil for free, as you can imagine money is tight and what money we have is spent on equipment.
We are a serious band and have plenty of experiance from previous bands. Also, we have all taken music in some form, from a subject to out of school lessons.

If you could suggest somewhere in Yeovil that would be free, wouldnt mind some noise, and be available Saturdays, preferably between 11 and 7, we would be sooo greatful!

We're back

We are back! Rather jet lagged and tired but as soon as we get our heads together you can expect to see regular updates on this site again.

Happy New Year!

Well last day of the year and possibly the last blog posting for a week or so. How has it been for you? For many the memories of 2004 will be filled with the scenes of devastation from the Asian Tsunami but there were other events too and it's worth remembering those as well.

This year the local music scene has been through a string of changes but the one with perhaps the deepest influence may turn out to be the new licencing act. As a result of this, the old two in the bar rule goes and just about anywhere that has live music will need to tick the extra box on the licensing form. There are some exceptions for acoustic playing, religous services and the like, but the pub scene will be changed forever.

The good news is that the South West and South Somerset in particular, has a thriving live music scene with almost every possible style of music catered for. Over the nearly three years that we have been producing Suited and Booted, we have grown from a distribution of less than 3000 copies to something in excess of 4500. We now distribute the magazine to 122 locations from Lyme Regis in the South to Wincanton in the East and Ashill in the West.

The magazine itself has (we hope you agree!) grown in quality and in number of pages. This is thanks to you the readers and to our advertisers who pay the bills; without them there is no magazine. So we send out a BIG BIG thank you to those who have advertised and continue to advertise in Suited and Booted.

Cygnet Theatre Company

Those of you who live closer to Exeter than Yeovil may well be interested in the next Cygnet Company production to be staged at the New Theatre in Exeter.

Starting on Wednesday 5th January running nightly at 7.30pm till Saturday 8th is "The Comedy of Errors". (There is also a matinee performance on Staurday at 2.30pm.)

Tickets are £9 on the door or £8 in advance (concessions, we presume they mean children students and OAPs) are £7 and £5 respectively.

New Year's eve is tomorrow and once again the Police have promised to 'crack down' on anti- social behaviour. With their new ability to issue on the spot fines of £80 for being a prat, some people (not you of course!) may find the 31st an expensive night out!

In the Comedy Awards last night, "Little Britain" took the top honour, well deserved in our humble opinion. "The Office" still managed to gain yet another award for best writing, Ricky Gervaise's mantlepiece must have needed some serious reinforcement for all those awards!

It must rank as one one of Britain's biggest heists; the theft of £22.5Million from a bank in Northern Ireland. The trouble is, at least half of the haul is in Northern Irish banknotes, not well known for being accepted anywhere except in that province!

If a dodgy looking geezer with an Irish accent and a wodge of Northern Irish banknotes tries to do a deal with you in the pub tonight, be very careful!

Tuesday night ID cards not required

Well it seems that Parliament is determined to take away our freedoms by making us carry ID cards (for those who think this might be a good thing might want to check the some of the arguments at www.no2id.net); just one small step from here to microchips under the skin and a full on Police state. Absolutely nothing to worry about though....

Tonight the music continues with no ID cards required (unless you look 16 and are trying to buy a Bacardi Breezer).

Us and Them at Flicks

Those of you who got to Flicks in Yeovil on Sunday night, will have no doubt greatly enjoyed the Pink Floyd tribute show put on by 'Us and Them'.

Flicks was relatively quiet as Jason and the guys started, but the bar filled with people as the evening progressed. They ran through the whole 'Wall' album and once an early lighting glitch had been sorted, the light show was very impressive. The backdrop had projections of the Wall film showing at key moments and some great lighting effects throughtout.

In the second half there were tracks from 'Wish you were here' and 'Dark side of the moon' although our favourite was 'Once of these days I'm gonna cut you into little pieces'; which we think is from Ummagumma, but someone will correct us if that's wrong! These were followed by a couple of atracks from the later albums and an encore. A good show, well presented. Nice one!

'Us and Them' Pink Floyd experience tonight!

If you are a Pink Floyd fan then get yourself to Flicks Bar in Yeovil tonight. (The bar is just off South Street almost opposite Globetrotters.)

Us and Them are renowned for putting on the complete Pink Floyd event, not just the music but all the lighting as well.



The gig starts at 7.45 pm, doors open around 7pm. Not sure about the ticket price but no doubt it will be excellent value.

Yetties Christmas Sing along

Christmas Day a week today!!

Can you believe it? Christmas day is just a week away! The news programs seem to have themselves worked into a frenzy about you shoppers making the poor retailers wait for their money...all together now ahhh. Isn't strange how the prices can drop by 50% and yet they still make money, do you think they might have loaded the prices first?

Dave Allen (no not the Irish whiskey drinking comic) sent us a demo CD by Dablues which is the electric incarnation of the Dr Stomp Trio, well known to many.

Dablues play stripped down, lean 'n' mean, gritty blues on the opening track titled Boogie Town. Ironicly track two, Lovin' Baby is a lot more boogie woogie in style. Anyway it's a good little demo and something of a taster for an event happening on the 5th February.

On February 5th at the Bell Inn, Ash the Dr Stomp Trio will play an eclectic mix of blues and American folk performed on, vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, harmonica, five string banjo, fiddle, lapsteel, bass guitar, mandolin, drum kit and flatfoot dancing. (Well you can't say you aren't getting your money's worth!)



Then, we presume half way through the evening, they tranform into their alter ego of Dablues to do an electric set. They will performing material from their new CD "Did you ever?" which has had good reviews from The Dorset Echo and Blues in Britain magazine.

Tickets are £7 on the door but only £5 in advance from the Bell or by phoning 01308 488387. The gig will start around 8.30pm.

Black Friday?

Apparently the local health authorities have tagged today as black Friday. Today they are expecting the mass of the population to get blind drunk, start fights, fall over etc etc. Well we recommend having a few drinks (but stay in control) and wedging yourself into the crowd at your favourite live music venue. This will help you avoid the £80 fine that the Police can hand out for various anti-social activities like being sick in the street. (Actually being sick in the street is pretty grim anyway!)

X-teller of a year!

Here at Suited and Booted we have watching (and listening too) the progress of X-teller for quite some time. (They featured as our cover band way back in July 2003!)And how they have progressed!

X-teller kick off their Christmas run of gigs at The Fleece & Firkin, Bristol on the 15th (doors open at 8:30pm), should be quite lively there what with 4 bands on.



Following that they'll be playing locally at the White Horse, Wincanton on the 16th and at the Swan, Sherborne on the 18th. Last gig of the year will be at The Louisiana, Bristol on the 21st to round things off. You can check their web site gig guide by going to:www.x-teller.co.uk/gigs.html

X-teller also tell us that their recent recording session was very productive not to mention exhausting! They recorded a brand new song, Victim, and finished off the 6 other tracks to complete the album. The tracks are currently being mixed and should be with us soon... We'll keep you posted.

Pure Volume web site

We came across a website a couple of days ago that allows bands to host their songs and users to listen to them for free! The site is called purevolume.com and it has music from all around the world.

You can sort the bands by name, genre or location and then having selected what you like go to their web entry. It's all very neat and has an audio player built in so it doesn't even need to pop up your Windows media player. Broadband connection is probably a must have though.



There are some great bands on the site as well, both signed and unsigned. Recommended for a visit!

Jazz Club hosts Christian Brewer

You are being invited by Sherborne Jazz club to join them for a free mince pie at their last gig of 2004 at The Plume of Feathers in Sherborne this Saturday (8:00pm on December 11th).

You can hear one of the country's most exciting young alto players: Christian Brewer and his highly-praised London-based band.



Some time ago Christian sent the club his debut album to check over and they were mightily impressed.

So was Ian Carr, evidently, because this is what he wrote:
"This is a truly superlative debut, the standard of playing is phenomenal. Brewer is a virtuoso alto saxophonist with a glowing, lyrical sound and is also an excellent composer. His musicians are the "Young Lions" of the London jazz scene.... There's a great variety of music, with interesting structure and hair-raising solos."

That was a couple of years ago and since then it has been difficult to pin Christian down as he has been so much in demand at Ronnie Scott's and all over Europe.

It should be an evening of great music! The line-up is:

Phill Donkin or Mick Coady on double bass
Tristan Mailliot on drums.

There are just two gigs in the Yeovil area tonight (at least as far as we know). At Woods Wine Bar in Yeovil you can enjoy the Jazz sounds of the Ruth Hammond Trio. Literally just around the corner at Chicago Rock cafe, Makerfield will be covering three decades of hits with everything from Kylie through Shania and lots more besides.

In Taunton you can indulge in some modern jive at the Royal British Legion or listen to Hoppy Horton and crew at the Pen and Quill. Enjoy!!!

Live music on a Tuesday night

I know that Tuesday can often seem the dullest night of the week but there is at least one great gig on tonight and it's happening at the Wyndham Arms in Kingsbury Episcopi (near Martock). If you are into Cajun, blues or just plain good music then book your ticket to hear Geraint Watkins and Charlie Hart playing at 9pm tonight. Between them these guys have played alongside: Dire Straits, Bill Wyman, Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Ian Dury...well you get the idea!

Tickets are £6 if pre-booked (a good idea since these gigs often sell out) or may be a little more on the door.

PETHERTON PICTURE SHOW CELEBRATES AWARD OF £3,600

Some good news for those of you who enjoy seeing films locally in South Petherton. Petherton Picture Show - which presents films on alternate Fridays at South Petherton's David Hall - has been awarded £3,600 from the Lottery-funded UK Film Council. The money has been used to purchase new projection equipment, which has already been installed."We are thrilled to have received this donation, which allows us to provide an even more professional presentation for members of Petherton Picture Show," said Iain Wilkinson, who is on the Board of the Petherton Arts Trust as well as being one of the Picture Show organisers.

Petherton Picture Show (PPS) has become one of The David Hall's most popular regular events. "Our aim is to continue the provision of a cinema in the village - something which began at the start of the last century," said Mr Wilkinson. As PPS is a registered film society membership is required, but is free of charge and offered at all film showings. The last film of 2004 - "A Mighty Wind", by the Director of "This is Spinal Tap" and "Best in Show" - is on Friday 17th December and the new season of films begins on Friday 7th January. Live Music in Seaton

We've just had a reminder from St Clare's in Seaton (Devon) that on Saturday 11th December they are hosting the Arizona Smoke Review who are a mixed USA/English ethnic country rock band. They should appeal to all those of you who enjoy folk and roots music. Tickets are £8.

Also at St Clare's in January on Saturday 22nd will be Martin Carthy a giant of the British folk music scene. Tickets again are just £8.

Creative Arts at the Octagon

As many of you may be aware from January 2005 the Arts Centre on South Street in Yeovil will close. The good news is that the Yeovil Community Arts Association (YCAA), the charity that ran the arts centre is organising exhibitions in the Gallery Bar area of the Octagon Theatre under the heading of "Creative Arts at the Octagon".

NEW HORIZONS
From the 17th January till the 19th February
New Horizons is the first of a series of exhibitions being held in the Octagon throughout 2005. This show brings together twenty of the most talented artists now working in Somerset and Dorset, producing artworks that are diverse in style, technique and subject matter.

The exibition is open from Monday to Saturday from 12 noon until the end of each evening's performance or until 5pm if there is no evening show.

Julie Dunn opens at the Alex

Last night we managed to get to Julie Dunn's opening jazz night at the Alex in Yeovil. Julie was using the occasion to launch her new CD (as featured in this months Suited and Booted). It turned out to be a busy evening, with staffers from both Ivel FM and the Western Gazette also there and mixing it with the jazz fans.

Although prior to performing Julie seemed more than a little nervous, the performance was fantastic. She and the band played both tracks from the new album and some that had not made it on. Every one who was there seemed to enjoying the music, it was a great result for an opening night.

The Alex has had something of a makeover recently and now sports some wood panelled walls giving it a warmer look. (The acoustics seem to work out fine as well.)

We managed to grab a couple of pictures whilst there and yes Julie really is playing whilst sat under the stairs!

Hi Guys

It seems that even after almost three years of producing the South Somerset/Dorset edition of Suited and Booted some people (Landlords you know who you are!) still have not realised that listing are free!

Guys there is no excuse, if you want to fill your venue full of punters then all you have to do is email/fax/call us with the information. Even when the print edition has hit the streets the web site is still updated with new information. Gig news from band members is most welcome as well.

Speaking of which we had a phone call yesterday from a gentleman in Bournemouth to let us know that the web site was now selling chainsaws and accessories! The good news is; the web site is fine, not a chainsaw in sight!

Both the Arts diary and Gig diary in PDF format are now available for download at the web site. We will hold putting January up there just yet to give people time to get their information to us. Have a great day.
