Going to a nursing home? - Make sure it's this one!
DUBLIN (Reuters) - A nursing home in Ireland has hit on a cheering way to keep up the spirits of its elderly patients -- by providing its own pub.

St Mary's Hospital in County Monaghan, near the Irish border with Northern Ireland, believes ready access to a good pint may help its patients -- average age 85 -- actually live longer.
"We would say the whole social aspect of life does extend the years -- it means the patients aren't bored to death," Rose Mooney, assistant director of nursing told Reuters.

The pub, which opens at 11 a.m. and closes at 9 p.m. and charges normal bar prices, had also led to an increase in the number of visitors, she said.

Having its own bar made the hospital, which has around 140 patients, unique in Ireland, she added.

Have a great day!

Monday...quiet isn't it

Well how is Monday for you?

Musically things are a bit thin on the ground today with Just the Open Mic Night at the Westgate in Taunton to excite you.

Just 3 days till the Christmas & New Year deadline!!!!!

The deadline for the combined Christmas & New Year edition of Suited and Booted is this Thursday 17th November.

Send us details of any and all events you know are hosting, organising or planning by Thursday 17th November. Remember this one edition covers both December and January!

Microwave your bra to stay warm this winter

TOKYO (AFP) - We know that ladies ofetn feel the cold but this seems like an extreme preventative measure. For the woman who wants to stay both warm and environmentally conscious this winter -- and isn't bothered by extra bulk under her shirt -- a lingerie maker has unveiled a thick bra that can be heated in the microwave.

Triumph International modeled the bra in Japan which has launched a "Warm Biz" campaign urging people to bundle up to save on heating.

The bra pads are filled with an eco-friendly, reusable gel that can be heated up in a microwave or with hot water. For good measure, a pendant of a hot pepper dangles from the front.
But the bra isn't for those favoring understated attire. A long strap flows down from the back, which is meant to be wrapped around like a boa to keep one's neck warm.

"We hope this will not only help prevent global warming but also provide a little fashion chic to the office," Triumph's Japan branch said in a statement.

Sunday, Brief Encounters Film Festival & Music

Brief Encounters Wednesday 23rd till Sunday 27th November
Bristol's annual celebration of the short film - is the leading competitive short film festival in the UK. It combines extensive film exhibition, including a range of premieres and new talent from all over the globe, with education and training from respected industry professionals and an array of special events and parties. Brief Encounters is also the place to discover talented new filmmakers and meet key people from the film industry.

The first Brief Encounters festival of short film took place in 1995. It was originally seen as a ‘one-off’, part of the international celebrations marking the centenary of cinema. But it proved so successful, it has now become a key event in the film festival calendar.

Since its launch Brief Encounters has not only consistently showcased a fantastic array of shorts but has also presented a full programme of special events which have featured key industry figures such as : Andrea Arnold, Jack Cardiff, Terence Davies, Damien O’Donnell, Mike Figgis, Terry Jones, Mark Kermode, Andrew Kotting, Anthony Minghella, Shane Meadows, Nik Powell, Martin Strange-Hansen, Royston Tan, Alan Yentob and many more.

Programme Introduction by Mark Cosgrove, Creative Director
It is my view, and justly represented by the films in this year's festival, that the short film is more than a cinematic footnote to its younger offshoot the feature film. Indeed the short film provided the very source of experimentation at the birth of cinema in the work of Lumiere and Méliès.

This pioneering spirit of experimentation and adventurous filmmaking continues today whether it’s making work with new technologies or providing filmmakers with a creative space away from the increasingly formulaic constraints of the feature film.

The range of films in this year's programme demonstrates that the short film can surprise, bewilder, delight and provoke (sometimes all at the same time). In a packed five days you can journey through a myriad of lives from around the world and experience an exhilarating mix of styles and cinematic visions.

They may indeed be brief but I can assure you they will also be memorable encounters.
Mark Cosgrove, Creative Director

Friday, Armistice, Jesus Juice & music

Today is Armistice Day; the anniversary of the official end of World War I, November 11, 1918. It commemorates the armistice signed between the Allies and Germany at Compiègne, France, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front, which took effect at eleven o'clock in the morning — the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month." While this official date to mark the end of the war reflects the ceasefire on the Western Front, hostilities continued in other regions.

Jesus Juice
An ingenious US couple is moving to bottle and sell pop icon Michael Jackson's high-profile child sex trial -- in the form of an irreverent brand of wine dubbed "Jesus Juice".

A journalist who covered the four-month trial and his actress wife have applied to trademark the name for a full-bodied merlot, inspired by claims by Jackson's teenage accuser that the star plied him with wine decanted into a soft drink can that he dubbed "Jesus Juice".

In documents posted on the website thesmokinggun.com, Bruce Rheins and Dawn Westlake sought to register a "Jesus Juice" logo featuring a photograph of a scantily-clad man in a crucifixion pose, wearing a Jackson-like sequined glove and a black fedora obscuring his face.

They just get more and more bizzare over there!

Thursday, Moose, Music & Bacon!

There's A Drunken Moose Loose!
They rarely have problems with drunks or rowdy animals, but residents of a home for the elderly in southern Sweden had to deal with both when a pair of intoxicated moose invaded the premises.

The moose - a cow and her calf - had become drunk over the weekend by eating fermented apples they found outside the home in Sibbhult, southern Sweden, said employee Anna Karlsson.

Police managed to scare them off once, but the large mammals returned to get more of the tempting fruits.

We had the following news from the Makin Bacon Blues Band.
The Makin Bacon Blues Band - Back In The Blackmore Vale Tour
Yes, we are back in the Blackmore Vale with raucous Rhythm & Blues & traditional Rock 'n Roll.

The sad news is that our great singer Clare Perry has left us to pursue her professional singing career with the comedy duo "Mockingbirds". Good luck Clare - I'm sure you will be back with us occasionally.
The glad news is that the lovely Angie Young has taken up the torch as the band's resident diva, and that we have been joined by Rockin' Del Bates on tenor horn & keyboards.

We are back at our favourite pub, "The Antelope" at Hazelbury Bryan on Saturday November 12, and at The Crown Inn Marnhull on Friday December 2. We hope to be appearing In Blandford early in the New Year and will confirm the gig later.

Unfortunately our arrangements for New Year's Eve have fallen through so if you need live music for your New Year's Eve bash, give us a shout. As ever we are ready to play for any occasion demanding live music such as wakes, birthdays, christenings, weddings, divorces, bar mitzvahs, or remission of sentence. Wednesday, Jazz in Bristol, Homer & live music

There are no performances at Sherborne Jazz Club this month.
Their next gig is Sue Kibbey with Gilad Atzmon's Quartet on Saturday December 3rd. You can find out more about this and details of advanced bookings on their website. (Click here).

In the meantime they recommend an outstanding gig this coming weekend at The Tobacco Factory in Bedminster, Bristol. The Sherborne Jazz Club sometimes collaborate with the Tobacco Factory and The BeBop Club in Bristol and this event links both of these venues as it is a performance by Andy Hague's Big Band and, as you may know, Andy not only runs Bristol's BeBop Club but is also a wonderful composer as well as being one of Bristol's leading trumpet players and one of the most in-demand drummers.

So there are many reasons to enjoy this gig. Not the least of which is the musical one - Andy always composes accessible; swinging (and sometimes quite hilarious) compositions and also the fact is that composers writing original material for a big band these days are very few and far between. So to quote the Tobacco Factory: "This promises to be one of the jazz highlights of the year.

Here are some details from the Tobacco Factory
Sun 13th Nov Andy Hague's Big 40 Band £10.00/9.00

To celebrate both his 20th year in Bristol's music scene & his 40th birthday, trumpeter Andy Hague has assembled an all-star big-band to play new arrangements of his own compositions. Trumpets - Derek Lawrence, Dave Ford, Gethin Liddington, Andy Hague. Saxes - Ben Waghorn, alto, Keith Morgan, alto, Jake McMurchie, tenor, Ruth Hammond, tenor, Kevin Figes, baritone. Trombones - Vince Ford, John Cornick, Nick Attwood, Alex Stewart. Piano - Jim Blomfield, Bass - Dave Goodier, Drums - Simon Gore.

Bad News for Homer Simpson
'Violent' Homer upsets Russians. Russian politicians are warning TV stations to cut back on violent shows if they want to avoid censorship.

The number one show they have mentioned is The Simpsons.

Minister Yelena Afanasyeva said: "The Simpsons is crammed with violent and aggressive episodes. These cartoons also introduce antagonism between children and parents." Doh!

Take Art Live presents: Third Space in “Born to Run”
a new play by Amanda Whittington

at Bruton - Sexey’s School Tue 15 Nov at 7:30pm. Tel: 01749 813393
Clapton & Wayford Village Hall Wed 16 Nov at 7:30pm. Tel: 01460 74849
Hornblotton Village Hall Sat 19 Nov at 7:30pm. Tel: 01963 240282

Third Space begins its South Somerset tour of “Born to Run” at Sexey's School on Tuesday 15th November. This new play specifically made for village halls and untraditional venues, from one of our brightest playwrights, is a story about love, hopes for the future, of when to stay and when to let go.

Set on Hayling Island where Pete and Louisa run a seafront café. In between Louisa teaches baton techniques to the juniors of the ‘Hilight Twirlstars’ while Pete tries to get his beloved narrow gauge railway up and running. When one Christmas eve Joe, Pete’s long forgotten brother, returns from 15 years traveling on route 66…..

Gavin Stride, the director of the production, commented that ‘When Amanda and I first spoke about creating a new play we talked about the pressures and choices particularly facing young people outside a major city- the pull of the city, the sense of belonging, the perception of the country. We where also drawn to exploring communities at the edges of the country. Which led us to Hayling, and to the decisions we make in our lives.’

Born to Run is in many ways an old fashioned play with three people, in one place, with a story to tell, a charming, gentle 90-mminute play suitable for everyone over 10 years old.

Have fun!

Love & Marriage Joke
Husband and wife are waiting at the bus stop with their nine children.
A blind man joins them after a few minutes. When the bus arrives, they find it overloaded and only the wife and the nine kids are able to fit onto the bus.

So the husband and the blind man decide to walk. After a while, the husband gets irritated by the ticking of the stick of the blind man as he taps it on the sidewalk, and says to him, "Why don't you put a piece of rubber at the end of your stick? That ticking sound is driving me crazy."

The blind man replies, "If you would've put a rubber at the end of YOUR stick, we'd be riding the bus... so shut up."

OUTRAGE OF PUDDLE SPLASHER JASON COMES TO YEOVIL COURT!

By Richard Smith

A MOTORIST was fined for splashing two workmen as he drove through a puddle at 15mph.
IT consultant Jason Evans, 34, was tailed by police for two miles before being booked.
He said yesterday after being hit with a £150 penalty and three points on his licence: "It's unbelievable this ever came to court.

"It was an accident. I was only in second gear. I couldn't have done anything different unless I'd pushed the car through the puddle.

"I didn't even notice what I'd done until I saw a man in my mirror raising his fist. I wanted to stop but was intimidated by the police car behind me."

The workmen were clearing leaves from a ditch in Charlton Mackrell, Somerset, when Evans splashed past.

Prosecutor Iyan Stephens told Yeovil magistrates: "The water was about two inches deep. Evans drove through at such speed one of the workmen's jeans was soaked."

The incident was seen by a police patrol officer. Evans, of Yeovil - who said he drove 40,000 miles a year and had a clean licence - admitted inconsiderate driving.

Police said: "All motorists have a duty to show consideration for other road users and pedestrians."

No spashing now!

Apple iTunes sells 1m videos in 20 days
Apple has sold more thana million videos through its iTunes music store in thefirst 20 days after launching the service, the company has reported.

"Selling a million videos in less than 20 days strongly suggests that thereis a market for legal video downloads," said Apple chief executive Steve Jobs.

"Our next challenge is to broaden our content offerings so that customers can enjoy watching more videos on their computers and new iPods."

Not hard enough, moaned female customer
A mail-order porn video outfit has been stung for £4,000 by Dorking magistrates for failing to measure up in the hard-core department, the Mirror reports. Pabo Ltd was fined the four grand plus £2,044 costs and ordered to pay £75 compensation to a female customer who moaned that explicit rumpy-pumpy on the covers of three videos she'd bought did not appear in the final, censored cut.

Of the unnamed smut aficionado, Surrey County Council said: "The company had not shown any interest in the consumer's complaint, so the purchaser turned to Trading Standards." Peter Denard of Trading Standards added: "Consumers are often embarrassed to complain about purchases such as these and companies take advantage of them."

Tuesday music & psychics

Did you enjoy your halloween night?
Here we are on the first day of November and the sun is shining. This being a Tuesday, things are little quieter than the average but there are still good things out there to listen to.

On the topic of things spooky:
Psychic didn't see attack coming-A woman who apparently had a grudge against self-professed psychics severely punished a palm reader in Maryland who failed after being put to a test.
Police say the woman approached 38-year-old Kevin Patrick Miles, who owns the Zodiac Zone kiosk, and said, "So, you're supposed to be a psychic?"
Miles says the woman then pulled a soda bottle from her purse, threw it at his head, and asked "Did you see that coming?" before leaving.

October 31st Halloween

Grim Halloween
We saw this on Yahoo.
The apparent suicide of a woman found hanging in a tree in the US went ignored for hours because neighbours thought it was a Halloween decoration.

The 42-year-old woman's body was suspended 15 feet from the ground at the side of a busy road in Delaware from Tuesday night, police said.

Locals noticed the body early on Wednesday morning but dismissed it as a Halloween prank.

(Didn't they check their diary? Ed.)

Sweet little Children
No doubt hordes of sweet young children will come to your door demanding their treat or they play a trick on you. As these children grow up they become the spotty faced proto-thugs that demand money and run a key down your car if you don't cough up.

Sounds a lot like blackmail to me and we encourage it??

Events on Monday Night
As far as we can tell the only live music event tonight in the area is the open mic night at the Westgate in Taunton. We do know that many pubs will be running Halloween themed evenings though.

Have fun spooky evening

Freaky Friday, Blair & music

Print edition of magazine out now
The South Somerset & West Dorset edition of the magazine is making its way out to you right now. If you don't yet have your copy it will be with you soon!

Blair is the scariest!
A latex Halloween mask of Tony Blair is more popular than every other ghoulish design, a fancy dress company has said.

The Prime Minister's image has out-sold former gruesome favourites Dead Eye the Pirate and Charlie the Skull. A mask of US President George Bush is the sixth best-selling design, with a scary Margaret Thatcher mask trailing in ninth place, Angels Fancy Dress said.

Just over two-thirds of the 750 online orders for Tony Blair masks were placed by people living in the north of England and Scotland.

Thursday, Games & Music

You thought that those childish games of Rock, Scissor Paper were a waste of time?
A Canadian has been crowned World Rock Paper Scissors champion.

Andrew Bergel, 29, a Toronto lawyer, thrilled his hometown crowd with a winning throw of paper to take the gold medal and the £5,000 first prize. Bergel defeated California student Stan Long, who received £1,000 for his second-place finish.

About 500 competitors took part from as far away as Australia, New Zealand, Norway, the United Kingdom, as well as 26 US states and five provinces.

Those of you who are wondering about a Spoof championship need wonder no more. The current world Champion is famed Chef Marco Pierre White.

November gigs now downloadable

You can now download the November gig list for West Dorset and South Somerset as a PDF file by pointing your browser to http://www.suit-boot.co.uk/yeovil-gig-diarynov05.pdf.

Yes it is a bit of an eye chart, but we figure that you deserve as much information as we can give. Perhaps we ought to start selling magnifying glasses!

This seems at the moment to work better with Internet Explorer than Mozilla as a browser, if you have any ideas why we would be pleased to hear them!

The Arts pages will follow soon as will the pages for the Taunton & Bridgwater areas.

Wednesday: music, cookies & motion 'on the job'

Has the world gone mad part 437 - Toy car, cookie prompt bomb scare at S.Diego
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A toy car and a cookie prompted a bomb scare at San Diego airport on Tuesday when they were mistaken for possible bomb-making parts in a passenger's luggage.

Officials closed the commuter terminal at San Diego International Airport and evacuated passengers for about an hour after baggage screeners using X-ray equipment raised a red flag.
"Both of those items together on the screen gave the appearance of an ... improvised explosive device," Transport Security Administration spokeswoman Jennifer Peppin said.

Bloody dangerous those chocolate chip cookies....they put inches on your waistline.

Caution: motion on the job can make you sick!
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Early nerve damage caused by repetitive motion on the job (we can't quite believe Reuters wrote that phrase!) can cause "sick worker" syndrome, a fatigue or depression that can be mistaken for poor work performance, according to a study published in this month's Journal of Neuroimmunology.

The study done on rats found that nerve injuries caused by low-force, highly repetitive movement -- common to typists, pianists and meatpackers, among other professions -- can be blamed on increased production of proteins known as cytokines.

Blimey and all this time we had assumed that Government Ministers who didn't seem to do much were just lazy bastards. It turns out that they are just avoiding on the job repetitive motion and so saving us taxpayers from having to pay sick pay!

This will soon no doubt become a slackers charter, "sorry boss, couldn't come to work today, cytokines was gettin' me down."

Well good news! The November edition of Suited and Booted is now at the printers to have their magic weaved over it. A simple computer file is turned into around 185Kg or 406lbs weight of printed paper.

The new Apple video iPod has already been turned into the pornPod! 'Adult' content providers are rushing to supply downloadable content suitable for the new device. But, call us old fashioned if you like but won't a 40 incg double D cup breast look something less than it best on a 2.5 inch screen?

Homer makes men of the decade list!

From Homer Simpson to Bob Geldof, 10 famous males have been named the Men of the Decade.
TV chef Jamie Oliver, England manager Sven Goran Eriksson and cyclist Lance Armstrong are included on the list, as are writer Ian McEwan and Blur singer Damon Albarn.
The Top 10 was compiled by a panel of experts for magazine Men's Health to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

Each man represents a different area of expertise, including sport, music and design.
Designer Sir Paul Smith, iPod creator Jonathan Ive and geneticist Craig Venter complete the list.

"These are people of real substance and solid achievement rather than temporary fame," said Men's Health editor Morgan Rees.

"The people on our list have used their talents to change the world around them, rather than just to draw attention to themselves.

"We were particularly pleased to see Homer Simpson on the list.
"He has taught a whole generation how to take on the challenge of modern fatherhood and win - although not always with honour."

Top 10 Men of the Decade: Philosopher: Homer Simpson; Sportsman: Lance Armstrong; Visionary: Jonathan Ive; Designer: Sir Paul Smith; Manager: Sven Goran Eriksson; Activist: Bob Geldof; Writer: Ian McEwan; Musician: Damon Albarn; Chef: Jamie Oliver; Scientist: Craig Venter.

David Hall Arts Centre to close?

We had this information come in this evening about the David Hall Arts Centre in South Petherton.

SSDC GETS 400 LETTERS OF PETITION TO KEEP THE DAVID HALL

Over 380 letters of petition asking South Somerset District Council to re-think its decision to cut all funding to The David Hall Arts Centre in South Petherton are being handed over tonight (Thursday, 20th October) to a full meeting of the Council.

Supporters of The David Hall have also sent letters directly to SSDC and all will be considered at a future meeting. The District Council's annual contribution of £10,477 per annum is the Hall's only source of public funding and represents almost half of its essential running costs. The grant will be withdrawn after April 2006 and this loss of income means that the future of The David Hall's is in peril. Cliff Keating, Chairman of Petherton Arts Trust (PAT), which owns and runs the Grade II listed building in the centre of South Petherton, said that the Trustees, staff and volunteers were all delighted with the support they are receiving to encourage the SSDC to change its mind. "Our hope is that the Council will now rethink its stance and continue to fund us as before. At worst, we hope for a reduction in revenue, rather than no grant at all," he explained.

The organisation put out an appeal for help in petitioning the Council as soon as news of the cut was announced in June. This was followed by an Open Day and Public Meeting at the Hall in July, when numerous individuals came forward with offers of assistance - including fundraising ideas and practical help. Some of the Hall's best known performers - including Phil Beer of Show of Hands fame, and acoustic guitarist Gordon Giltrap - also offered support via fundraising gigs."If the SSDC withdraws all its funding we shall have to find another £10,500 each year on top of the £250,000-plus we need to find to refurbish the building. This would add a considerable burden to our abilities to raise funds - and not having the support of our District Council could be detrimental to our bids for contributions from other funding organisations," Mr Keating said. "It is our plan to become self-sufficient over the next few years but if the SSDC withdraws its full annual grant next April, it may well mean that the Hall will have to close."

PAT has also provided relevant officers at SSDC with copies of its Business Plan. This details the Trust's vision for the future of The David Hall, and its plan of action to raise the money needed to refurbish the building. Meanwhile, with the current season's events underway, PAT is busy putting together a new programme, to run from January to the end of April 2006. "Although The David Hall is particularly well known for its folk/roots/world-music events - which are the envy of many larger venues - we are scheduling a varied and extensive spring programme, offering something for everyone interested in the performing arts," said Mr Keating.

Event details can be obtained by phoning 01460 240 340 or by visiting www.thedavidhall.org.uk

Thursday music & Astrologer Lives after predicting death!

Do you believe in astrology? Then check this out.

Indian astrologer lives after predicting own death

BHOPAL, India (Reuters) - Hundreds of people flocked to a village in central India on Thursday to see if an astrologer who forecast his own death would indeed die as predicted.
But the 75-year-old man survived the day.

Kunjilal Malviya, who lives south of the Madhya Pradesh state capital Bhopal, had been meditating in his house after announcing he would die on Thursday between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m (10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. British time).

A police official confirmed the astrologer was fine and quoted his family members as saying the prediction failed because many of those gathered had prayed for him to live.

Pythons & music

There's a Python in my...
This piece from the Press Assosciation caught our eye. A 10ft snake thought to have been living in sewage pipes in a block of flats for three months has been caught.

The 10ft boa constrictor, named Keith, is thought to have been abandoned after its owner was evicted after owing £5,500 in rent to his landlord. The huge snake has been slithering out of toilet bowls throughout a block of flats since August and could have been left in revenge following the eviction.

The creature has been spotted on several occasions, but no-one has had the courage to try and catch it. Terrified homeowners have been forced to put bricks on toilet seats in a bid to keep the beast from popping out of the pan.

Tuesday; music & underwear!

Stinky underwear a thing of the past!
Stinky underwear could soon be consigned to the dustbin of history, thanks to the invention of what manufacturers claim are the first "pong-proof pants".

Tiny fragments of silver woven into the North Face briefs help stop bacteria multiplying, meaning they can be worn again and again without getting smelly.

Even the oldest trick in the book for those concerned about causing a stench - turning underwear inside outside (actually the thought is turning my stomach over Ed.) out before wearing it for a second day - is rendered unnecessary, the company says. The way the material is woven also helps resist malodorous microbes and mildew.

Pack Monday Fair, music & Marine Theatre meeting

Pack Monday Fair in Sherborne today
Pack Monday Fair is an annual event held on the first Monday after 10th October, old Michaelmas Day, this year to be held on 17th October (today!)

It is thought that the name is a corruption of the word "pact" as this was the time of the year that new agreements were made between farmers and labourers taken on for casual employment.

St John's Almhouse in Sherborne

It is no longer an agricultural fair, but the main streets still fill up with traders and food stalls, from 9am until late in the evening. A funfair is also held on the edge of town.

Marine Theatre Lyme Regis public meeting
A public meeting to discuss the future of the Marine Theatre as part of the cultural quarter development is being held tonight. The theatre, which has had a variety of uses throughout its life, is in need of refurbishment and keeping the building in a good state of repair is an ongoing battle.

It is a fantastic arts and music venue, in an area that has few other local performance arts resources. Its importance to the community at large would be difficult to overstate as it also hosts a huge variety of functions throughout the year; from collecters fairs all the way to wedding receptions.

Event Date: 17/10/2005
Venue: Marine Theatre
Address details: Church Street LYME REGIS DT 7 3BS
Opening times: 7.00pm

We made a short video about the Marine Theatre a while ago and you can download it from here. The file is about 2 Megabytes in size.

Bollocks from the Government
Every now and again a Government or quasi Government spokesperson does their best to whip up some mass hysteria. Today it concerns Bird Flu; see below.

Birdflu could kill 50,000 Britons - gov't adviser LONDON (Reuters)
Britain is braced for a pandemic of birdflu which could result in at least 50,000 deaths throughout the country, the government's chief medical officer Liam Donaldson said on Sunday.

His comments followed laboratory test results on Saturday which showed the same deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu as that found in Turkey and Asia had infected ducks in Romania, confirming the virus had reached mainland Europe.

Woh Neddy; let's just stop there for a moment shall we?
In one of the worlds most populated countries with a population of approximately 1.3Billion people; China this strain of Flu killed...60 people.

Now, any death is of course a personal tragedy for those concerned and the UK has more than its fair share of Flu related deaths each year but this sounds like scare mongering. What's more, there is no vaccine for this avian Flu strain, all the Doctors can do is treat you with anti-virals if you get the infection.

Call us cynical if you like but we wonder who has something to gain by making lots of noise about the number of people who may die from this Flu strain.

Eric Clapton tell his life story
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Eric Clapton will follow musicians Bob Dylan and Sting with a book about his life, telling of his 40 years as the top rock and blues guitarist of his age in which he went "to hell and back", publisher Doubleday said on Thursday.

Doubleday in the United States, and Century in Britain, both owned by Bertelsmann AG said they would jointly publish the book in spring 2007 and paid Clapton a "substantial advance."
ADVERTISEMENT Trade industry sources said the advance was between $4 million (2.3 million pounds) and $6 million.

Clapton will talk openly about his life, including the death of his child in a tragic fall from a New York apartment and his raucous years in the rock world, said Doubleday spokesman David Drake.

Women say knickers to g-strings
LONDON (Reuters) - Women are deserting g-strings in favour of more substantial undergarments, while bra sales are busting all expectations as ladies grow larger.

Consumer research group Mintel said on Wednesday that spending on thongs has fallen 14 percent since 2003, meaning that the minimalist undies on show above waistbands everywhere now account for fewer than one in four of women's undergarments sold on the 388 million-pound UK knickers market.

Instead, women are opting for boy shorts, maxi pants or French knickers, Mintel suggested, adding that the "control bottom" sector was also in good shape.

We blame Bridgit Jones and her extremely large knickers!

Fancy A Roller? Mercury's 'Roller' goes up for sale
Freddie Mercury's silver Rolls-Royce is being auctioned on eBay by the late Queen star's sister.
Bids for the Silver Shadow luxury motor have already hit £7,900.

Unusually, the car comes with a Kleenex Mansize Tissues box containing the rock legend's unused tissues. As the flamboyant singer always kept a box in the car, his sister Kash could not bring herself to remove them when she was given the Rolls-Royce.

The 1974 model has a grey leather interior with wood trim. The British car also contains a car phone and a radio cassette player.

The car's last public appearance was in May 2002, at the London premiere of the Queen musical We Will Rock You - when it transported Mercury's family to the Dominion Theatre in London's West End. It has been in occasional use since the lead singer and main songwriter of Queen died in 1991, at the age of 45.

A have a rockin' and rollin' day!

Although about a darker period in British history, this is a really uplifting and positive story. Between 1760 - 1820 the British enslaved about 1.5 million African men, women and children. But amidst all that there were some quite extraordinary stories of people who eventually obtained their freedom.'Black Diamonds' is one such story.

It's the tale of a slave voyage from Whitehaven in Cumbria, and tells the story from the perspective of 3 men - the ship's captain, a common sailor, and Bartholomew the son of an African king. After many adventures Bartholomew absorbs white English culture and obtains his freedom, but uses that freedom to return home.

Julia Darling, who sadly died in April this year, was an award-winning writer from Newcastle upon Tyne. She won the 2003 Northern Rock Foundation's Writers Award. Her first novel Crocodile Soup was a best seller, and her second, Taxi Driver's Daughter, was long-listed for the Booker prize. Her writing is brave, engaging, and often very funny. Fine Time Fontayne will direct for the company again. With his theatrical sense and Julia’s writing, a high quality and enjoyable evening is guaranteed to all through Take Art.

Madonna, George Bush & Open Mic Night!

How was your weekend? Things were pretty quiet at Suited and Booted towers apart from being able to listen to a new CD from local boys, Dr Stomp & Professor Oz called Blues, Beats & Stomping Feet. It's pretty darn good and we will add a full review later in the week.

Live music today

No live music listed in the West Dorset & South Somerset areas today but you could try out at the Open Mic Night at The Westgate in Taunton.

In the news today:
Jewish mystics to Madonna: Lay off our sage!
JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Word that Madonna's upcoming album includes a paean to a 16th-century Jewish mystic has prompted the rabbis who guard his legacy to accuse the pop idol of sacrilege and hint at divine punishment.

The "Confessions on a Dance Floor" collection includes a song titled "Isaac" -- in reference, entertainment media say, to Rabbi Isaac Luria, founder of the Kabbalah school of mysticism which counts Madonna, 47, as one of its devotees.

Sunday garage band fun and a message to the Yanks

This message alleges to be from John Cleese (of Monty Python fame) and is addressed to the people of the United States of America.

To the citizens of the United States of America: In light of your failure to elect a competent President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective immediately.

Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths, and territories (excepting Kansas, which she does not fancy).

Your new prime minister, Tony Blair, will appoint a governor for America without the need for further elections. Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire may be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed.

To aid in the transition to a British Crown Dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect: (You should look up "revocation" in the Oxford English Dictionary.)
1. Then look up aluminium, and check the pronunciation guide. You will be amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it.

2. The letter 'U' will be reinstated in words such as 'favour' and 'neighbour.' Likewise, you will learn to spell 'doughnut' without skipping half the letters, and the suffix ize will be replaced by the suffix ise. Generally, you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. (look up vocabulary).

3. Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler noises such as "like" and "you know" is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. There is no such thing as US English. We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take account of the reinstated letter 'u' and the elimination of -ize. You will relearn your original national anthem, God Save The Queen.

4. July 4th will no longer be celebrated as a holiday.

5. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers, or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you're not adult enough to be independent. Guns should only be handled by adults. If you're not adult enough to sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist then you're not grown up enough to handle a gun.

6. Therefore, you will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous than a vegetable peeler. A permit will be required if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.

7. All American cars are hereby banned. They are crap and this is for your own good. When we show you German cars, you will understand what we mean.

8. All intersections will be replaced with roundabouts, and you will start driving on the left with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables. Both roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour.

9. The Former USA will adopt UK prices on petrol (which you have been calling gasoline)-roughly $6/US gallon. Get used to it.

10. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French fries are not real chips, and those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called crisps. Real chips are thick cut, fried in animal fat, and dressed not with catsup but with vinegar.

11. The cold tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all. Henceforth, only proper British Bitter will be referred to as beer, and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as Lager. American brands will be referred to as Near-Frozen Gnat's Urine, so that all can be sold without risk of further confusion.

12. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as good guys. Hollywood will also be required to cast English actors to play English characters. Watching Andie MacDowell attempt English dialogue in Four Weddings and a Funeral was an experience akin to having one's ears removed with a cheese grater.

13. You will cease playing American football. There is only one kind of proper football; you call it soccer. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which has some similarities to American football, but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like a bunch of nancies).

14. Further, you will stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the World Series for a game which is not played outside of America. Since only 2.1% of you are aware that there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable.

15. You must tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us mad.

16. An internal revenue agent (i.e. tax collector) from Her Majesty's Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all monies due (backdated to 1776).

17. Daily Tea Time begins promptly at 4 pm with proper cups, never mugs, with high quality biscuits (cookies) and cakes; strawberries in season.

God save the Queen!

Gigs in the Taunton & Bridgwater area Saturday

Rolling Stones show doesn't go a bomb
The Rolling Stones stopped their show early Thursday night at UVA's Scott Stadium. Sixty minutes into the show Thursday night, Mick Jagger made an unexpected announcement. He stepped to the microphone and announced to the 55,000 fans on hand that the band was taking an intermission at the request of stadium security. Jagger said the Stones would be back in around ten minutes.

Shortly thereafter, the stadium lights came back on and bomb sniffing dogs were brought onto the stage. According to witnesses, the band was escorted out of the stadium. The band was seen getting into vans and being driven away from the stadium under police escort.

Security cleared out those sitting on the stage, those sitting in the first thirty rows on the field and those in the first ten rows in the stadium sections closest to the stage. Dogs were seen sniffing on the stage, in those aforementioned areas of seats and backstage.

In an official press release, Carol Wood, Assistant Vice President for University Relations states, “a bomb threat was phoned in at 8:56 p.m. to 911. The threat was specific to the stage area in Scott Stadium. Every action was taken to ensure the safety of those in attendance. The crowd of approximately 50,000 was cooperative and worked with the police and concert staff throughout the sweep, which lasted for about 45 minutes. Once the police declared the area safe, the concert resumed. The band said it would not cut the concert short, and completed the entire repertoire. The show finally concluded without further incident at about 12:15 a.m”.

Kangaroo and live music!

Kangaroo warning sign maker collides with - a roo!
We found this Reuters story on Yahoo.

Roo & Joey all together now...aaaaah

"I was riding my motorbike with my mate when the kangaroo jumped straight into it," Australia's Herald Sun newspaper on Friday quoted John Fleming as saying.

"Of course I've got a bit of flak from my mates calling me Skippy, and the guys from work sent me a get well card that's a warning sign for a kangaroo."

Skippy was the kangaroo star of an Australian television series.

Australia's population of kangaroos is conservatively estimated at more than 57 million and pose the biggest animal risk to motorists, accounting for more than 70 percent of animal related accidents in 2004.

Dance on Friday 7th at Bridport Arts Centre

Trans-Mission presented by State of Emergency UK Limited

Trans-Mission draws upon a fusion of dance styles and influences, mixing contemporary dance with African, Jazz, hip-hop and physical theatre.

The choreography of the five dancers covers humour and poignancy in the tales of women’s relationships, a man’s journey from the city streets of Zimbabwe to London, and the nature of family in all its guises.

“What is out of the ordinary is that (choreographer) Bawren Tavaziva aims for emotional directness, openness of spirit and human warmth – not qualities often seen, or indeed aspired to in today’s contemporary dance.” Sanjoy Roy, Dance Now Magazine 07 October 05 - 8:00 PM Tickets: £9, £8 members, concessions £5 students, u’16s.

Music & Gay Wizards!

Harry Potter Gay?
A cleric turned top-selling author of supernatural children's novels was thrown out of a school where he was delivering a talk after he told pupils that Harry Potter was "gay".

Reverend Graham Taylor, who penned the novel "Shadowmancer" which, like the tales of the famous boy wizard created by J.K. Rowling, centres on witchcraft and battling evil, got his marching orders after teachers accused him of homophobia.

"As for Harry Potter, well, he's not the only gay in the village," the former Anglican priest told children at Penair School in Truro, referring to a catchphrase from the popular comedy TV show "Little Britain".
He also described the villains in Rowling's blockbuster series as "wimps" and called TV "crap" compared to books.

Teachers brought Taylor's talk to the 12-year-olds on Tuesday to a premature end, saying the youngsters had become "excitable", and asked him to leave.

Jazz and Wednesday happenings

Ronnie Barker

It was sad to hear about the death of comedian Ronnie Barker. For those of a 'certain generation' he was always around on a Saturday night to make us laugh. Gone but not forgotten.

The rest of the season includes the Craig Milverton Quartet on 9th November and the ever popular Charlie Hearnshaw Quartet on Wednesday 14th December.

The shows all take place at the Tacchi-Morris Arts Centre in Taunton and this season the venue will be experimenting with a series of new settings to create a more intimate atmosphere.

Bogus work excuses on the rise: 'God didn't wake me'
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Off-the-wall reasons for calling off sick are on the rise as U.S. workers are increasingly willing to blame everything from wet cement and snakes to ghosts and a higher power to get a day off from work, according to a survey released on Tuesday.

This year, 43 percent of U.S. workers called in sick when they felt fine, up from 35 percent that did so last year, the survey of 2,450 employees from CareerBuilder.com showed.

Reasons not to show up for work ranged from: "I was too drunk to drive to work" to "I forgot I was getting married today." One employee who did not believe in alarm clocks told the boss that "God didn't wake me."

The survey, which also polled 875 hiring managers, showed the most popular day to make up an excuse was Wednesday, while hiring managers said they were more suspicious of workers who called off sick on Mondays and Fridays.

Still, no matter how good the excuse, it won't always work. Nearly one-quarter of hiring managers surveyed said they had fired an employee for missing work without a legitimate reason.
