Creative Arts in Yeovil

Yeovil Community Arts Association (YCAA), the charity that ran the Yeovil Arts Centre, is now organising a programme of exhibitions in the Gallery Bar area of the Octagon Theatre, Hendford, Yeovil BA20 1UX, under the heading of "Creative Arts at the Octagon".

Wednesday 30th March to Saturday 30th April
David Brooke and Caroline Ireland
An exhibition by two Artists with original, distinctive styles, who produce imaginative paintings and drawings that convey a sense of wonder and mystery.

David Brooke's paintings create the feeling of myth, although often they are not based on any specific legend. Caroline Ireland works using pastel and watered our together to produce brilliant, vibrant effects.

All exhibitions are open Mondays to Saturdays from 12noon to the end of each evening's Theatre performance or 5pm if there is no evening performance.

The Octagon Cafe is now open for coffees, teas and light snacks from 12noon on Mondays to Saturdays, as well as for evening pre-performance meals.

The Octagon has access for the disabled by means of a lift to the first floor Gallery.
All exhibitions are organised by the Yeovil Community Arts Association.

News in from The David Hall Arts Centre in South Petherton is below:

Events at The David Hall Arts Centre in South Petherton are proving to be a sell-out this season, so patrons are being encouraged to book well in advance to be sure of a seat."Our Spring programme - which runs to the end of April - is a huge hit," reports Cliff Keating, Chairman of the Petherton Arts Trust. "We had capacity audiences through January and February and gigs in March and April are already booking well.

Many regulars have become used to either reserving at the last minute or just turning up on the night; but to be certain of a place, we recommend booking in advance. We hate having to turn people away!"Mr Keating added that The David Hall's seating capacity was increased from 100 to 130 towards the end of last year. "It is terrifically rewarding to see every seat taken and know that we are providing the type of music and theatre that local people really want," he said. Performers like Phil Beer - of Show of Hands fame; the dynamic quartet Cellorythmics; Flook, with their Celtic roots and the vibrant young trio, Uiscedwr, all played to a full house. The much-acclaimed play The Vagina Monologues - presented by local theatre company, Portfire - also filled The David Hall for two performances.

Music events scheduled for the next few weeks include top roots-rock band, Equation (25th March); La Boum! - a formidable line-up of 10 top Scottish musicians (7th April); Martin Simpson - billed as one of the finest acoustic finger-style and slide guitar players in the world (16th April) and Michael Marra, who is widely acclaimed as one of Scotland's most talented and original songwriters and performers (23rd April). For family audiences, Kneehigh Theatre Company will present "Wagstaff the Wind-up Boy" on 31st March.

Thursday and Jim Morrison a dork?

Shocking news to people of a certain age as....

Footage reveals Jim Morrison the nerd
According to Reuters - Florida historians have discovered a 40-year-old film clip of a clean-cut Jim Morrison that will give fans a different view of the Doors singer before his wilder days as a drug-using rock legend who drank hard and died young.

The 1964 black-and-white public relations film, shot at Florida State University (FSU) shows a nerdy-looking Morrison, a rock bad boy who died in 1971 at 27 years old, acting the part of a young man whose university application has been rejected.

The 16-minute video has Morrison among wholesome scenes of college life, parades and football, a sharp contrast to his image as a long-haired, leather-clad rebel poet accused of exposing himself and simulating a sex act at a Miami concert in 1969.

"It's incredible. He's so clean-cut and soft-spoken," said Jody Norman, archives supervisor at the State Library and Archives of Florida, and a Doors fan.

The Web site ifilm.com, which features video of all kinds, posted the clip under the heading "Jim Morrison: College Dork."

In the film, the Florida native plays a dejected would-be university student who reads a rejection letter from a school and then earnestly questions a school administrator as to why he can't go to college.

"But what happened? How come my parents and the state and university didn't look ahead?" he said.

The Doors were one of the most influential rock bands of the 1960s whose hits included "Light My Fire" and "Riders on the Storm." They broke up a few years after Morrison died.

We feel we ought to explain that the Exploding Custard is a fast-moving, entertaining demonstration of do-it-yourself kitchen-table science. The show includes dozens of simple but spectacular experiments, all using materials readily available at home. Children can volunteer to participate and there is plenty of laughter.

At the same time, the experience is thought-provoking and challenging. Recurrent themes include pressure, combustion, liquids and gases, conservation of energy, the process of scientific enquiry... and how children are better at true experimentation than grown-ups!
Audiences always leave an ‘Exploding Custard’ show buzzing with excitement and teachers regularly report that children continue to talk about the demonstrations and unanswered questions for weeks afterwards.

Wednesday-midweek & dogs

News today that dog owners could be paying more than they ever thought for their canine friend.

In its annual Cost of a Dog report published on Sunday, pet insurer Churchill said the Great Dane was the most expensive dog, costing 31,840 pounds over its average 10-year life, followed by the Rottweiler at 24,340 pounds.

Mongrels costs 20,998 pounds, while Jack Russells were a relative bargain at 17,476 pounds, said the insurer, which released its findings ahead of Crufts, the world's biggest dog show, opening Thursday in Birmingham, central England.

By comparison, a Jaguar X-type, Saab 9-5 or Volkswagen Passat sell in Britain for around 20,000 pounds, which is also the same price for a round-the-world cruise.

Special fund raiser for Fiveways School

Mrs Claire Fowler is organising a night of entertainment to raise money for Fiveways Special Needs School, Victoria Road in Yeovil. This is in the wake of the recent fire in which the School was badly damaged.

She has organised an Entertainment Night at the Halfway House in Chilthorne Domer, Yeovil where Matthew Rock (sometimes Musical Director of Yeovil Show Company) will be performing from 8pm till 11:30pm on the 26th March. Tickets cost £10.00 each and can be obtained from the Halfway House or by calling Claire's mobile number 07899 926452 or bought on the night. All money raised will go to Fiveways Phoenix Fund.

News from the Cheese & Grain, Frome

Lots of news in this morning from the Cheese and Grain in Frome.

On Saturday 23rd April (St Georges Day), they host the twin lead guitar band, Wishbone Ash. This year the band celebrates 35 years of touring and plan to keep up the pace by visiting Turkey, Germany, Holland, USA, France and of course the UK.

In late 2004 Finnish guitar man Muddy Manninen replaced Ben Granfelt (also a Finn) as the man to work alongside original founding guitarist Andy Powell. The changes have worked out well and to hear for yourself just how well, get yourself along to the gig on the 23rd April at the Cheese and Grain.
