Theo Travis Quartet plays at the Plume on 22nd April

The superb season of contemporary and modern jazz at sherborne jazz continues on Saturday 22nd April at 8:00pm at The Plume of Feathers with a performance by the highly talented saxophonist and flautist, Theo Travis.
Theo inspired the sherbornejazz audience when he played here last season with John Etheridge. He's a firm favourite in London's jazz scene and can be heard regularly at the capital’s premier jazz hot spots, and we are very lucky to have tempted him west for a night of top grade jazz at sherbornejazz .
Theo will be complimented by Andy Hague’s Bristol-based trio with Jim Blomfield piano, Dave Goodier double bass, and Andy Hague on drums.

Theo has made a name for himself for his soulful playing style and fine compositions and, whilst jazz is undoubtedly where he feels most at home, but his musical experience has benefited widely from forays in to both the world of classical music and into rock. Theo studied classical music at Manchester University and, in 1999 joined the legendary rock group Gong, with whom he toured world-wide and co-wrote the album Zero to Infinity.
The list of musicians with whom Theo has played alongside reads like a who’s who of British jazz, with stints along side Jim Mullen, Slim Gaillard, Dick Heckstall-Smith and Tony Coe, to name but a few. Plaudits have included nomination for ‘rising star’ at the 1996 and 1998 British Jazz Awards, and praise as being “one of the very best young tenor players of this or any jazz generation in Britain” by trumpeter and presenter Digby Fairweather.
In July 1994, Theo appeared on a one-hour interview on New York radio station WKCR-FM. He was also commissioned to write new music for the 1926 Hitchcock silent film The Lodger which was performed live in September 1996 as part of the Derby Metro's 100 Years of Cinema Festival. Theo was acknowledged by Penguin author Nicholas Royle as one of the inspirations behind his novel Saxophone Dreams.

Party In The Park-Advance Notice
With no Glasto Fest this year to attend, some of you may be feeling at loss for what to do. The Wheatsheaf pub in South Petherton may have the answer with their "Party In The Park" to be held on Saturday 10th June.
This annual event is a one night 2 band concert with disco, Pork Roast and Grand Draw.
It raises money for the Wheatsheaf Carnival Float hence the £4 (pre-booked) and £5 on the gate Admission Fee.

A pensioner told how she kept a 107-year-old hot cross bun in a box in her home.
The bun - made in 1899 - has been handed down through the generations of Margaret Haste's family.
Mrs Haste, 87, a retired teacher, of Nacton, Suffolk, said the bun was kept as a reminder of her mother's sister, who died aged 13 in 1899. "My mother's sister was ill and died shortly after the bun was delivered to her home," said Mrs Haste.

Tell your holiday horror story!
Theatre production needs holiday makers’ stories
Bristol based, Ministry of Entertainment is looking for local people and holiday makers to help with its next production – Mrs Gerrish’s Guesthouse. The show will premiere later this season at The Tobacco Factory.
Set in the 1950’s, true stories and personal experiences will form the basis of the show, with tales from front-line holiday-makers and veteran landladies of that Great British institution the sea side guest house.
The Ministry would love to hear stories from any age group who have experienced the joys and trials of a family beach holiday anywhere in Britain, but in particular in Weston super Mare.

STOCKHOLM (AFP) - A man in central Sweden was convicted of shooting potatoes from an apartment window with a home-made gun, Swedish press reported.
A court in Falun, central Sweden, fined him 80 days' earnings for firearms offences.
In August 2005, inspired by seeing a potato thrower on television, the 25-year-old man bought parts for the gun in a local supermarket, Soedra Dalarnes Tidning wrote.
The man and a group of friends met in a flat in Bojsenburg, in the heart of Sweden, loaded the weapon with potatoes and began firing from the balcony into the car park below, the paper Wednesday.
Authorities confiscated his gun as well as two sacks of potatoes found in the apartment.
Police tests showed the tuber cannon had a more potent firing power than a revolver.

We had this email come in from the Landlord at the White Hart in Crewkerne. It seems he's interested in putting on live music but there may be a catch. Read on for more information.

What I'm looking for are performers or bands that are going to promote themselves .

Tempted by salads? (complete with frog!)
SYDNEY (AFP) - An Australian woman came close to tasting more French cuisine than she cared for after finding a dead frog in a pre-mixed supermarket salad.
Julie Lumber found the unwanted ingredient in her Caesar salad "with the works" when preparing for a barbecue at home with friends, the Australian Associated Press reported.
"I opened up the bag and the frog fell out on the side of the plate," Lumber said.
"I just went 'oh my god' and then we had a laugh about it. I couldn't stomach French food with the frogs legs and snails and I wasn't about to try it," Lumber said.
Luckily for the reluctant gourmand, the five-centimetre (two-inch) frog was found before the barbecue got underway, still clinging to a green lettuce leaf with its left leg outstretched.
"There were a few of us in the kitchen -- luckily other people were with me to see it because you wouldn't want people to think you put it in there," she said.
Lumber took a photo of her unusual salad before returning the package, frog and all, to the supermarket in the east coast city of Brisbane, where she "got a full refund".
"I'll make my own salads from now on because at least I can wash the lettuce myself. I love French dressing, I always put it on my salads -- just not that type," she said.

Monday and 1 week till May deadline

Well being a Monday it's quiet and the only thing we have listed for you is the Open Mic Night @ The Westgate in Taunton.
However that does give us the opportunity to talk about one of the South West's most highly rated festivals that happens in July.
The Larmer Tree Festival gets great review from all those people who attend it and as a consequence tickets usually sell very quickly. The festival is set in the Larmer Tree Gardens near Shaftsbury and Blandford in Dorset.

Heart disease patients in the UK could soon be fed dark chocolate to test whether the food has health benefits.
Laboratory experiments have already suggested that some forms of the confectionery could help stop blood clotting and prevent heart attacks.
Now Professor Roger Corder, head of the department of experimental therapeutics at the William Harvey Research Institute, in London, wants to test dark chocolate on 40 patients with cardiovascular disease.
This is not a reason to go on a choco-binge!

Don't Panic!
If like me you have watched far too much reporting on the so called 'bird flu crisis' (All done with with a real news reader 'at the scene'!) then perhaps we should look at things in perspective.
This 'crisis' consists of one swan in Scotland being diagnosed with the 'deadly' strain of 'bird flu'
Reality check: One swan has died in Scotland.
In 2005, more than half a million people in the UK died of cancer and another half a million lost their lives to heart disease in England and Wales alone.
So why no panic, why no amazing 'public protection campaigns', about that?
Watch out for how the news is fed to you; it is serving somebody's agenda, maybe not yours.
So if you must eat Swan, please make sure it is thoroughly cooked!

Online adulterers hunted
A website aimed at trapping men who use the internet to commit online adultery has been launched.
Izzy Schumacher, 35, from Ormskirk, Lancashire, came up with the idea for nethim.com after she said she caught her ex-boyfriend cheating on her on an internet dating site.
The site works by trawling chatrooms and dating sites for straying men and is believed to be the first of its kind.
There is no where to hide!

Blues Rock Group Egypt play in Bournemouth
Some news from slightly outside our normal area but we thought you might be interested.
Egypt is a Blues/Rock three piece band formed in 1987. (Based in the UK)
Eric Chipulina - Guitar/VocalsAlan Fish - Bass/VocalsPeter Correa - Drums
All three are former members of legendary Progressive Blues outfit The Groundhogs, appearing in several albums and touring throughout UK and Europe over many years.
Alan's credentials also include playing with members of Welsh HM pioneers Budgie in the band Tredegar, two albums for ex-Bo Diddley harp player Billy Boy Arnold, and a European tour for Chuck Berry among other things.
Egypt will be performing on Thursday 20th April @ Centre Stage Club, 14 Queens Road, Bournemouth, Dorset, BH2 6BE, 01202 540065
In June 2004 they released their third CD Midnight Sun, the first of three planned for Blues Matters Records, and are currently giging & organizing gigs in the UK and Europe.

LONDON (Reuters) - The British music industry lost more than one billion pounds in the past three years as a result of people illegally filesharing on the Internet rather than paying for music, its trade organisation said on Tuesday.
The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) released its data as the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, which represents the industry globally, launched almost 2,000 cases of legal action in 10 countries in Europe and in Hong Kong.
The British industry lost 414 million pounds last year as a result of illegal swapping of music on the Internet, up from 376 million pounds in 2004. In the three years to 2005, the total loss amounted to 1.1 billion pounds, the BPI said.

What we want to know is how do they calculate these figures? There have to be some fairly massive assumptions about how many downloads are happening (unless the illegal downloaders just put their hands up to be counted).
The other big assumption is that if these tracks were not downloaded, then people would buy them at full retail. Well we doubt it; fact is if you find a way to get music for 'free' then you are probably going to try listening to some different styles, maybe things you would never buy for example. Just possibly, sharing files in this way actually increases the available market.
We are not condoning illegal downloads but we do wonder how painful this is in reality for the BPI members; who is checking their figures?
Late musician's loo snatched
A toilet belonging to the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia has been stolen from the driveway of a house in Sonoma, California.
It's not known if the toilet was taken by a wayward fan or a thief remodelling a bathroom.
The toilet once stood in the master bathroom of Garcia's house. The singer died in 1995, aged 53. Police say they have no leads (or loo paper).
Booze in space!
Scientists have detected a cloud of alcohol some 288billion miles across; that is a lot of booze! In science terms this is pretty exciting news as it was believed that complex molecules like alcohol could not be formed in deep space.However you could not drink this stuff as it's actually the harmful methanol version of alcohol rather than the ethanol we normally drown our sorrows in. Still if you want your piece of the action just head for a region of our galaxy, the Milky Way, that is called W3(OH).

Wembley Late Again (and Again etc.)
Any of you out there who were planning to see some of the big gigs arranged this year for the new Wembley Stadium had best think again! All the events scheduled for 2006 are being moved from Wembley because construction is so far behind plan. Several of the bigger concerts including Bon Jovi are going to the Milton Keynes Bowl instead.

More students in England use mobile phones to cheat in exams
LONDON (AFP) - A growing number of students in England are cheating in their exams, with many using mobile phones to boost their marks.
The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, the examinations watchdog, found that more than 4,500 candidates were penalised for malpractice last year, an increase of more than a quarter -- 27 percent -- on 2004.
Of these, around 1,100 students were caught smuggling mobile phones into examination rooms, the body said in an annual report.
We wonder just who they are texting or phoning; is there some exam expert out there just waiting to send back the answers? If there is, do they send the answer back in full English or TXT?

The Power Of Beer - Lottie's brew
A farmer was toasting the health of a cow which made a wonder recovery after being treated with beer.
Tony Baskett and his wife Lavender, who are both in their seventies and live in Theberton, Suffolk, feared that their cow, Lottie, would die after she developed a stomach problem.
But a vet suggested treating Lottie with yeast - so Mr Baskett fed her Adnams beer from a bottle.
Now Lottie has made a full recovery and given birth to a calf which the family have named Adnams.
You know it makes sense!

Rollerblades dropped by Police
Police have dropped rollerblades as a mode of transport because they could not chase criminals across grass.
Officers who patrol London's Royal Parks have gone back to traditional bicycles as the best way of getting around.
A senior officer said the inline skates were hung up for good after the criminal community realised their fatal flaw.
That's what we like to hear about, top quality incisive thinking from the people who police our capital, the mind boggles.

On offer are beer baths, beer massages and beer cosmetics at the spa at the Chodovar Family brewery in Chodova Plana.
The converted cellars include seven huge baths inspired by Victorian design where guests can swim in beer while sipping a pint at a bath-side bar.

Middle Earth musical divides critics The "Lord of the Rings" musical, touted as the most expensive stage production yet, met mixed reviews on Friday as critics applauded its leaping orcs and menacing dark riders, but got lost in the tangled plots of Middle Earth.
The 55-strong cast slipped into 500 costumes and engaged in fight scenes and acrobatics atop a 40-ton, computer-controlled stage floor featuring 17 elevators, which spun and rose amid magic and illusion.
For all the feverish activity at Toronto's Princess of Wales Theatre, the show based on J.R.R. Tolkien's epic trilogy drew only one standing ovation in more than three hours, but many in the audience called it breathtaking and spectacular.

World's Oldest Animal Dies Aged 255
A giant tortoise thought to be one of the world's oldest creatures has died at Calcutta Zoo. Local lore said Addwaita the Aldabra tortoise was around 250-years-old. She had been at the zoo since 1875. Addwaita, whose Bengali name means "the one and only", was one of four tortoises brought to India by British sailors from the Seychelles.
She was a gift for Lord Robert Clive of the East India Company and apparently spent 125 years living in large garden before moving to the zoo.
"According to records in the zoo, the age of the giant tortoise, Addwaita, who died on Wednesday, would be 250 years approximately," said zoo director Subir Chowdhury.
The zoo wants to carbon date her shell to determine exactly how old she was.
The world's oldest documented living animal is Harriet, a 176-year-old Galapagos tortoise who lives at the Australia Zoo north of Brisbane.
She was taken from the island of Isla Santa Cruz by Charles Darwin in the 19th century.
Telephone's naked truth LONDON (Reuters)
Up to a third of telephone users in Britain make calls in the nude, with men more prone to do it without clothes than women, a survey revealed on Thursday.
Research commissioned by the Post Office, which offers a fledgling home phone service, revealed that 40 percent of men admitted to nattering naked compared with 27 percent of women. The results were based on a survey of 1,500 telephone users.
The research also showed that people were so busy that one in 10 people admitted to wandering off and leaving the caller talking to themselves.
So much for the value of communication!

Janette Mason's Din & Tonic Play on Sat 25th March
Janette Mason’s ‘Din & Tonic’

Janette Mason is probably best known for being the powerhouse keyboardist behind some of the UK’s top bands – not just in the jazz genre. With an impressive CV including stints playing with Oasis, Pulp, Seal and Suzanne Vega from the world of rock, as well as alongside established UK jazzers Ian Shaw, Claire Martin and Annie Whitehead (to name but a few), it is hard to believe that Janette has also found time to be the Musical Director for one of Jonathan Ross’s TV shows and write songs for the likes of ‘Sex and the City’ and the hit US ‘Drew Carey Show’! Phew!
Regular visitors to Sherborne Jazz Club will, however, best remember Janette from last years unforgettable gig from the Deirdre Cartwright Group when, together with her fellow musicians, she wove a spell over the enthralled audience there that night.
So, when Janette finally found time to begin her own project and release a CD, we jumped at the chance to book her. Through ‘Din & Tonic’, Janette’s compositions interweave hard-hitting rhythms with her angular, yet accessible use of harmony; complex textures that journey from intimacy to dynamic attack, intricacy to expansive fluidity.
As you might expect, Janette is joined by the very finest of UK musicians – each something of a legend in their own right.
On saxophones, Janette is joined by Julian Siegel – another musician that has wowed the fans at Sherborne with his own band (‘Partisans’), and a sax player with a wonderful tone and intense depth of playing.
Double bass is provided by the sublime talents of Dudley Phillips, late of Mark Lockheart’s ground breaking ‘Perfect Houseplants’. A self taught musician who won a scholarship to the Guildhall School of Music, Dudley is the kind of solid but creative backbone bass player that every band cries out for.
To power the rhythm section, Janette is joined by the incredible Winston Clifford on drums. Winston has played with everybody that is anybody on the London scene as well as US heavyweights Art Farmer, Freddie Hubbard and Archie Shepp, and has built up a reputation for rhythm and excitement that is second to none.
Saturday 25th March promises to be an evening of superb and exciting music, creation and interaction. The audience are in for a very special evening and a real treat!
To cater for the higher than normal numbers expected, this gig will now be staged at THORNFORD VILLAGE HALL (Thornford, Dorset – 3 miles south of Yeovil and Sherborne) – not The Plume of Feathers in Sherborne, as advertised.
Entrance is £12 for non-members, £10 for members and £7 for students (with ID) and accompanied under 18’s.

BEIJING (AFP) - Forget the Mao suits of a generation ago. Actually, forget about any clothes at all. Naked wedding photos are the hot new trend among young couples in once deeply conservative China.
Even in Anhui, a largely rural province in the east, many newly-weds are having their pictures taken in the nude, to the fury of their parents' generation, the Xin'an Evening News said.
"Some photo studios are just going too far. They allow young women to have their photos taken in bikinis
or with nothing on at all," said an irate woman from the Anhui capital of Hefei. "I hope the authorities will do something."
She had just found out that her daughter had taken two sets of wedding photos, one to show the family, and another considerably more intimate one for her own private consumption.
Try asking your local wedding photographer about that option!

Beer flows from house taps in Norway
OSLO (Reuters) - A woman thought she was in heaven when beer instead of water flowed from the taps in her apartment in west Norway.
"I turned on the tap to clean some knives and forks and beer came out," Haldis Gundersen told Reuters from her home in Kristiansund, west Norway. "We thought we were in heaven."
Beer in Norway is among the most expensive in the world with a 0.4 litre (0.7 pint) costing about 50 crowns (4.3 pounds) in a bar.
Gundersen said she tried the beer but that it tasted a bit odd and was not fizzy.
It turned out that a worker in a bar two floors below had mixed up the pipes on Saturday evening, wrongly connecting a new barrel to a water pipe leading to Gundersen's flat. The bar got water in its beer taps.
"If it happens again I'm going to order Baileys (coffee liqueur)," she said.

European toilet paper gets passionate
LISBON (AFP) - After launching black toilet paper last year, one of Europe's biggest producers of household paper products has introduced a new red version for those wanting to inject more passion into their bathrooms.
Portugal's Renova introduced its new line of red toilet paper -- along with black paper handkerchiefs -- at upscale stores in Austria, France, Germany, Portugal, Spain and the Netherlands last month and it plans to make the items available in other markets, including the US, over the coming months.
"It is a red that makes a huge impact, like a Ferrari," Renova international brand manager Jose Manuel Pinheiro told AFP.
A company statement said the new shade of toilet paper would "target the most hip points in town," adding that red "is the colour of our hearts, of passion, lust, fury, laughter, anger, love, fire."
Of course after you have wiped your bum it's going to be brown...so why bother?
There is enough on today to keep just about anyone happy!

More New Parliament Cock-Ups
After the news about the £400 Million Scottish Parliament suffering from collapsing beams come the latest fiasco. The new Welsh Assembly building has sprung a leak . The frankly budget build that cost only£67 million, is the new home of Welsh democracy.
Water was seen dripping through the Welsh Assembly building's timber ceiling on to the slate floor near the entrance. Rain also leaked into a steel and glass staircase reserved for members and staff.
The Richard Rogers-designed Senedd was officially opened by the Queen on March 1st. The building has been in use since February 7th. Assembly sources said parts of the building had expanded and split under a prolonged period of sunlight.
So are architects and builders so incompetent that they are not able to predict that sometimes the weather will be sunny and then sometimes it might rain? The mind bogles! What next? The building turns out to be a bit draughty on windy days? Numpties!

Thursday: People Power!, Music & Russians
Our esteemed councillors in Yeovil are busy whinging and moaning at present because local protests and petitions have suceeded in getting the building known as 'The Foundry House' a listed status. (Actually it started its life in the gloving business.)
The councillors complaint is that it is getting in the way of the next development in Yeovil and that anyway the building is ugly. Well if we measured worth by beauty, it's a fair bet that none of the local council would ever be elected!
This building is important because it represents some of Yeovil's history, a history that is being lost at a rapid pace. In the sixties another bunch of councillors oversaw the destruction of the old Middle Street in the name of modernisation and a new road. The road does not exist and however much you like Yeovil, the Middle Street they created is butt ugly.
The new leisure complex near the Foundry House has provided lots of facilities but it is a collection of steel frame barns that are hardly graceful or lovely to behold. If we can live with them then we can also live with the incorporation of our living history into the new development.
Well done to everyone who helped in this excercise of real people power.

A pensioner with a dicky ticker has made plans to be buried with his collection of top-shelf filth, Russian daily newspaper Utro has reported.
After a heart attack scare, 65-year-old Vladimir Villisov decided he could not bear to part with his cherished jazz hoard, even in the afterlife. The Mramorskoe man had a customised coffin made to house it, together with his decaying carcass. He explained: "The girls in those magazines have been my companions for years, and I want them to accompany me to the next life."
The report gets ever creepier as Mr Villisov, unmarried, reveals he sometimes lies in the red-satin-lined coffin to - ahem - read his antique Soviet smut.

Fat Aussies need tougher toilet seats!
According to news reports, Australians are getting so fat that toilet seats may have to be made stronger to bear their weight, the country's standards association said.
Standards Australia said it had begun looking into the problem and expected to recommend "an increase in the strength of toilet seats to accommodate the increasing size of humans". (What they mean of course is increasing fatness.)
The percentage of Australians who are overweight or obese has jumped around 10 percent in the past decade, to 62 percent of men and 45 percent of women, the Australian Bureau of Statistics announced recently.
Toilet seats are currently required to meet a rigidity test of 45 kilograms (99 pounds), which supports most people's weight in a seated position, Standards Australia chairman Colin Blair told national radio. A committee including manufacturers and consumers would assess whether that standard was still adequate, he said.

Still a smoker? Impending smoking ban spurs many to quit
LONDON (Reuters) - The decision to ban smoking in pubs, clubs and workplaces next year has already made more people want to quit the habit, according to a poll relesed today (Wednesday 8th March). The Commons voted in February to ban smoking in all indoor public spaces and the law could come into effect by mid-2007.
A survey of doctors, released to coincide with No Smoking Day, said the change in law was already having an impact, with one in five GPs reporting an increase in the number of patients asking about quitting.

According to news reports, Australians are getting so fat that toilet seats may have to be made stronger to bear their weight, the country's standards association said.
Standards Australia said it had begun looking into the problem and expected to recommend "an increase in the strength of toilet seats to accommodate the increasing size of humans". (What they mean of course is increasing fatness.)
The percentage of Australians who are overweight or obese has jumped around 10 percent in the past decade, to 62 percent of men and 45 percent of women, the Australian Bureau of Statistics announced recently.
Toilet seats are currently required to meet a rigidity test of 45 kilograms (99 pounds), which supports most people's weight in a seated position, Standards Australia chairman Colin Blair told national radio. A committee including manufacturers and consumers would assess whether that standard was still adequate, he said.

Sorry about the lack of recent updates; the production of the March edition of the Suited and Booted magazine has taken all our time!
Sex Pistols Turn Down Honour
LOS ANGELES According to this Reuters report; The Sex Pistols have opted out of appearing at their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The groundbreaking English punk rock group officially declined the honour -- to be handed out March 13 at a dinner and performance at the Waldorf Astoria in New York -- in a crudely scrawled, mispunctuated handwritten message posted on the band's Web site Friday.
"Next to the SEX PISTOLS rock and roll and that hall of fame is a piss stain," the statement read. "Your museum. Urine in wine. Were (sic) not coming. Were (sic) not your monkey and so what?"
The statement slammed Hall of Fame voters as "music industry people," and excoriated the high price of attending the exclusive event -- $25,000 for a table, "or $15,000 to squeak up in the gallery."
It concluded, "Your (sic) not paying attention. Outside the sh*t-stem is a real SEX PISTOL."
Other 2006 inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame include Black Sabbath, Blondie, Miles Davis, Lynyrd Skynyrd and industry executives Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss.
Susan Evans, executive director of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said of the band's announcement, "They're being the outrageous punksters that they are, and that's rock 'n' roll."

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - US-based Apple Computers crossed the billion-song threshold at its internationally popular online iTunes music store.
The billionth song officially sold from the Internet music shop was "Speed of Sound" by the British band Coldplay. It was downloaded by a man in the US state of Michigan, according to Apple.
Coldplay? Why would it have to be Coldplay? If things got anymore middle of the road they would be run over!

Just a note to let you know that Glastonbury rock band, Cable Co, are playing at the Glastonbury Backpackers on Friday night this week.
The Backpackers is reopening after a month long refurb, and to celebrate the occasion, Cable Co are playing, onstage at 9pm. Entry is free, and there will be promotions, giveaways etc.
If you happen to be in this part of the UK, do pop along. Backpackers is at 4 Marketplace, Glastonbury, Somerset, UK.

Fine warning over TV on mobiles
A trial found that nearly 80% would subscribe to a mobile TV servicePeople who watch TV on mobile phones or computers could face a £1,000 fine unless they have a £126.50 TV licence.
An increasing number of TV shows and repeats are being shown on portable devices as well as standard TV sets.
But shows broadcast on any device at the same time as they appear on TV are governed by standard licensing laws, a TV Licensing spokesman said.
"Most who watch TV on a mobile phone or computer also own a TV and are already covered by an existing licence."
"But those who only use their computer, for example, to watch TV broadcasts will need to ensure they are properly licensed."
Unless they visit your home to monitor what you download on the internet how the hell are they going to know? Doh! I just realised they already do that anyway! Big Brother IS watching you.

Monday: Fingerprints, TV, Yeovil oh and some entertainment!
Did you see Yeovil on the telly this morning?
Peter Barlow, owner of the Alex, Globtrotters and other venues was being interviewed about the introduction (in about a month's time) of fingerprint scan entry systems to some of the bars in Yeovil.
Everyone interviewed (including the Police) seemed to think it was a marvelous idea and would stop all those nasty hooligans from creating trouble.
Well our perspective is that this is another attempt at training you all to accept ID cards as a great step forward. (It isn't a great step forward in our opinion.) It is unlikely to stop violence (except possibly inside the venue) and although the venues talk about access being controlled by the Data Protection Act, the Police have already said they would have no hesitation in requesting the data if they felt it might be useful.
Of course it may stop underage drinkers getting bladdered in the venues that use it, but as long as someone has an older mate who will get drinks for youngsters from the Off Licence, under age drinking will still be around.
The Police State arrives in little ol' Yeovil! George Orwell is surely spinning in his resting place.
What next? Two for one drink promotions with your microchip ID card?

Barbie 'Excited' As Ken Revamps Image (We saw this on Sky news web site)
Barbie had better pay attention - her companion Ken is sporting a new look. Ken has undergone a series of makeovers since his launch in March 1961 and for his 45th birthday, he is getting a more 'sculpted' face. The new 'beach fun' Ken is also more toned and highlighted, according to manufacturers Mattel.
Over the years, Ken has seen his tan go paler and his hair blonder.
Hollywood stylist Phillip Bloch is said to have used celebrities as inspiration for Ken's latest makeover.
He said: "Ken has revamped his life - mind, body and soul. (Which plastic doll has a bloody soul, what a load of claptrap!) "Everyone knows how difficult it is to change, especially when you've lived your life a certain way for more than four decades."
The Ken doll was named after the son of Mattel founders Ruth and Elliott Handler.
The new-look toy goes on sale in the UK on March 1 priced £4.99.

Advances in mobile phone tracking technology are turning British firms into cyber sleuths as they keep a virtual eye on their staff, vehicles and stock.
In the past few years, companies that offer tracking services have seen an explosion in interest from businesses keen to take advantage of technological developments in the name of operational efficiency.
The gains, say the converted, are many, ranging from knowing whether workers have been "held up" in the pub.
There'll be no point in saying you have been held up on the M6 anymore, the boss will know that you spent an afternoon in the bookies!
Do you enjoy films?
Occasionaly we all spot mistakes in films at the cinema but we recently came acrossa web site dedicated to exposing these bloopers. Check out http://www.moviemistakes.com. In case you were wondering which film has most mistakes (according to these guys anyway), it was Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets with 263 errors!

U2 scoop three Meteors
U2 stole the show at tonight’s Meteor Ireland Music Awards as the rock band swaggered away with three awards at their home town event.The band, who have been topping the charts for over 20 years, successfully fended off newcomers to rake in the award for Best Irish Band, whilst their latest effort ’How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb’ took the Best Irish Album.

School tells woman to 'get stuffed'
A woman who wrote to a school to complain about its unruly pupils said she was shocked to receive this reply from the headmaster: "Tell her to get stuffed."
Mary Kelly, 62, from Marlborough in Wiltshire, sent the note to the bursar after children from neighbouring St John's School clambered over her fence into her garden. Her letter was forwarded to the headmaster, Patrick Hazlewood.
Believing he was replying back to the bursar, he wrote: "Tell her to get stuffed." But instead of its intended recipient, he sent the email to Mrs Kelly.
This must be part of Blair's new respect agenda!

Top tribute band celebrate in the South West !
Top R.E.M. tribute band 'Stipe' will be celebrating their 200th performance in the South West this February.
Originally formed in 1996, it was January 2003 when the band set out to charm music fans with a new lineup and a new attitude. Three years later, and the band has been established as one of the best and most popular tributes on the circuit, looking and sounding like the original, the members being genuine fans as well as accomplished musicians.
Having just entered the fourth year of the current line-up, the 200th performance approaches.
"We always get a friendly crowd in the South West. It's a great place to play", said a band spokesman.

A driver who challenged a parking ticket received a poem in reply from parking authorities.
Andrew Lynch, a shipping coordinator from Fleetwood, Lancashire, was given a £30 fine after his car overlapped the pavement.
He wrote to question the fine and the letter he received from Allerdale Borough Council in Keswick, Cumbria, included a poem.

Gates's fortune is put at 47 billion dollars (about £26 billion ), according to the latest list of the world's rich published by Forbes magazine.
Stop wearing denim you're having too much fun!
An Australian state plans to ban students from wearing denim because it is linked with having a good time. "It is associated with weekend wear, with recreational time.
It's just unacceptable at schools and we are trying to lift the standards," a spokesman for Western Australia state Education Minister Ljiljanna Ravlich said.The ban on denim in Western Australia's secondary schools will be imposed from 2007.
God forbid that anyone should have fun at school or college. No what we want is a generation of miserable gits who hate the idea of learning anything useful at all. That'll bloody teach 'em!
As an alternative how about getting rid of so called teachers who fail to deliver on the basic education young people need? Rant over!
