New music venue in Yeovil

We have just been to see Chris the new Landlord at the Railway Inn (bottom of Hendford Hill) in Yeovil.

He is putting on live music starting on 22nd October with Mark S. and his guitar. The acts will be solo artists mostly geared for the over 25 year olds. The dates so far seem to indicate that music could be on Thursday, Friday or Saturday nights (because of artist availability) so you'll need to keep an eye on the listings.

Fund raisers at David Hall Arts Centre

As many of you will know the David Hall Arts Centre in South Petherton needs to raise around £250k to rebuild some elements of the building structure. As a consequence there are regular fundraising events being held to raise funds. Whatever the reason you can have some fun!

Sarah Peterkin, director of Take Art Live is responsible for getting hold of acts from all over the country and further afield. She aims to bring us a varied and adventurous range of acts from music to theatre to shows for children. “I’m really excited about what we’re bringing here this season. It’s hard for me to choose, but my top picks are ‘Pacific Voices’, beautiful Samoan stories which will transport you to another world for the evening or the totally bonkers and musical Spike Theatre, one of the finest new theatre companies in Britain with a refreshing family show ‘Backwater’.”

Where does Sarah get all the acts from? “We go to see as many of the shows as possible - the Edinburgh Festival is always a great source. If I can’t see shows myself I rely heavily on other members of the National Rural Touring Forum (which represents organisations like us across the country), for their top recommendations. We’ve built up a track record over the years to deliver high quality acts and our village hall promoters are willing to take a risk with the unknown.”

Other great theatre is Quondam ‘Black Diamonds’, a fantastic piece of brave writing from award-winning playwright, Julia Darling. It has a dark theme but the show is very uplifting and thought-provoking. Two other national companies, Third Space and Big State, will offer up their latest shows. And straddling dance and theatre, Pretty Good Girl Dance’s brand new work ‘Morning, Noon and Marilyn Monroe’ starts its national tour in Somerset this autumn, returning in the Spring. Children will love Puppetcraft’s brand new show, ‘Nobody Rides the Unicorn’ and Waggish Radish Puppet Theatre’s ‘King Ethelbert and the Happy Scamp’. Jo King, king of stand-up, is Frank Sinatra for a musical journey through the crooner’s life and sings some of the best loved songs of the era on his way.

Jazz, classical, folk and blues feature strongly with great gigs from Chris James, Cabbage Alley, Howden Jones and Three’s Company.

Get them Monday morning blues?

Blind speed record
A South African has become the world's fastest blind driver after driving across a remote airstrip at 168mph.

Blind since birth, 33-year-old Hein Wagner of Cape Town had a sighted navigator for his record attempt. After crossing the airfield, he told reporters he wanted to do it again, but was considering piloting an aircraft for his next record attempt.




"I'm very happy," said Wagner, whose drive in a borrowed Maserati V8 GranSport was monitored by motoring organisation Motorsport SA and filmed for the Guinness Book of World Records.

Actually we think we saw some of this guy's practice runs down the Queensway dual carriageway in Yeovil; well the way some people drive you'd think they were blind!

VENICE (Reuters) - Ang Lee's "Brokeback Mountain", a tale of homosexual love in the mountains of Wyoming, won Venice's Golden Lion on Saturday, beating film festival favourite George Clooney in the race to take the top prize.

The latest movie by the director of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "Hulk" is adapted from a story by Annie Proulx and stars Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal as love-struck cowboys whose forbidden affair begins in 1963 and ends 20 years later

German airport security staff strip passenger in public
ORLEANS, France (AFP) - A senior member of a French association for accident victims said he would sue a German airport for stripping him in public when a security device reacted to a metal plate in his body.

"Wednesday I was going through the metal detector gate to take the plane and the alarm went off," said Rene Auguy, 59, from Saran in central France, recounting the incident at Cologne airport in western Germany.

"I was expecting it because I have a prosthesis, a metal plate as big as your hand at the top of my pelvis. I show a paper in French and English which explains the problem," he said.
"And then the security official pulls up my shirt and pulls my trousers down to the middle of my thighs. I find myself in my underpants in front of 300 people.

"The man runs his detector over me, and it gives the alarm. He takes me pretty violently to a booth about seven metres (22 feet) from the gate. I was going to take off my prosthesis when the man suddenly pulls down my underpants in front of everyone, the curtains were not closed," he said.

"I felt humiliated. And in the plane people were making fun of me. I had to tell them how to behave."

Auguy, a refrigeration engineer, said he would be filing a complaint Saturday as his personal dignity had been abused.

The airline German Wings and Cologne airport said they knew nothing about the matter and said they "were not responsible for security controls."

Inebriated Belgian woman dies in cemetery accident
BRUSSELS (Reuters) - An inebriated Belgian woman died in a freak accident when she ended up beneath a heavy grave stone at a cemetery, local news agency Belga said on Wednesday.
The 33-year-old was on her way home from a bar in the Belgian town of Pulle in the early hours of Saturday when she took a short cut through the cemetery.

But she urgently needed to relieve herself and crouched down between two gravestones. As she lost her balance, she grabbed one of the stones which gave way and landed on top of her.
The public prosecutor's office said she died of suffocation as she was unable to lift the heavy stone.

Antony and Johnsons win Mercury
Antony and the Johnsons have won this year's Mercury Music Prize for the album I Am A Bird Now. Led by New York-based singer Antony Hegarty, they beat acts including Coldplay, favourites Kaiser Chiefs and hip-hop artist MIA.

The £20,000 award is for the best album of the year by a British or Irish act. "I think they must have made a mistake," Chichester-born Hegarty said. "I am completely overwhelmed. I think that's insane." The pianist and singer's winning album, features contributions from Boy George and Lou Reed.

We had a call today from Jan Reay who is in the process of setting up a Ska band. Today the band is already a five piece but they feel that the sound would be complete if they had:

1) A trombone player
2) A keyboard player

Jan says their style is more Jamaican Ska than '80s style including plenty of instrumentals. Practice session will be held between Sherborne and Dorchester. So if the geography works for you and the thought of playing Ska live gets your blood moving then give Jan a call on 01300 345 173.

Mercury Music Awards
Rock band Kaiser Chiefs are hotly tipped to scoop the 2005 Mercury Prize beating the likes of Coldplay and The Magic Numbers to one of Britain's most prestigious music awards.

Bookmakers William Hill said the Leeds band were firm favourites to take the top prize with their debut album "Employment".

We guess you'll be able to see the awards on TV in the next week or so but we couldn't find the event in the listings.

One of our new contributors wrote a review of Harry's Bar in Yeovil this month and indicated that the live music was available for "the price of a pint". One of our readers called to remind us that as is common with many veunes now, you may well be asked for a small entrance fee, particularly if you arrive later in the evening.

Our featured band on the front cover this month are The Bleedin Hartz, who are (they say) 'the perfect example of the classic 4 Piece 'Rock Band' whose emphasis is on playing music in the 'Classic Rock' Genre.




The 'BLEEDIN HARTZ' are made up of Gary Lately, Simon LePulse, Julio Newlio and Cole Bouchet. All the Band members live and work in Somerset. Their 'Set Lists' combine 'Classic Rock' tracks from the 70's, 80's and 90's, and they try to perform them all as close as possible to the way the original artists performed them, 'Loud, Live and Rocking'.

Their music pays tribute to bands such as Pink Floyd, Deep Purple and Thin Lizzy, through to Aerosmith, Guns N Roses and U2.

The Classic 'Rock Band' Set Up of 2 Guitarists, Bass and Drums and powerful main and support vocals allow The BLEEDIN HARTZ to emulate the feel and sounds of many classic rock tracks. All members of the band have played in various support acts for the likes of Jools Holland and The 'Wurzels'.

First formed in February 2004, the band have colaborated well and stayed totally commited to their mutual love of classic rock music. Their 'Gig' posters laughingly state they are on a permanent 'Tribute To Who?' tour, this magazine wrote them up as a 'Great Tribute Band', but a tribute to who? (well we do make mistakes especially near the print deadlines!)

The Rolling Stones' new album has been illegally posted on the internet a week before its official release. A Bigger Bang, their first studio album in eight years, is available to download from several websites. The illegal downloads could cost the band millions in record sales.

The Rolling Stones join Oasis, U2 and Eminem on a list of artists who have fallen victim to internet piracy. A spokesperson for the Stones' record company EMI told The Times: "The first low-quality files of new Rolling Stones music were found illegally posted on Monday, the same day we began making the new album available for consumers to listen to via radio and streaming. "It is actually a major achievement to keep an album secure until this close to the commercial release date."

Piracy has been blamed for a fall in music sales. Recent research by the British Phonographic Institute revealed more than seven million Britons admitted to downloading music illegally.

His very own booze cruise
A sailor has been rescued after drifting around the English Channel for two days in his half-built boat with only beer to drink.

The 52-year-old Dutch man, who lives in Southampton, took to sea after he had an argument with his wife, Portland Coastguard said.

He was spotted in Weymouth Bay, about four miles off Lulworth Cove, by another yacht and towed by lifeboat into Weymouth harbour.

The Stranglers play live in Yeovil

If your youth involved pogo-ing along to "Something Better Change" and other Stranglers songs then here is an opportunity to relive your youth.




On Saturday 22nd October The Stranglers will be playing at the Westland Leisure Complex in Yeovil with support from Chapter XIII.

The combination of musical talents and enthusiasm, infused with large doses of charisma and dark notoriety goes more than a little way to explaining why The Stranglers have survived the vagaries of the music business.

These days The Stranglers have at their core original members Jean-Jacques Burnel (bass), Dave Greenfield (keyboards) and Jet Black (drums). Consummate vocalist Paul Roberts has been fronting the band for 12 years and Baz Warne, another musician of considerable pedigree and talent has been the band's guitarist since 2000.

Michael Lyons thought he'd come up with a great practical joke for his daughter's birthday party -- but he stopped laughing as soon as he was arrested.

As the man from Georgia, USA stopped by a bank with the party guests, he convinced one of his daughter's 13-year-old pals to hand a note to a cashier, stating, "Give me all of your money, this is a stick-up."

The cashier sounded the alarm and police stormed the building.

Quite a bit of news/shock for the local music scene...

But the Super Furry Animals will be playing in 3 weeks right
here in Somerset!

This band headlined the Other stage at Glastonbury 2004 and are playing 2000-4000 venues on their tour ... this will be a 400 ticket show as a tiny warmup to their Bestival main stage headline on Sunday September 11th..

They will be on Top Of The Pops this week promoting their new single "Lazer Beam" from their forthcoming 7th Album Love Kraft.

No we don't have a depressed web site but are main web site http://www.suit-boot.co.uk is being switched to a new funky server (that's what my ISP tells me anyway) .

As a consequence you may not be able to see our web site until tomorrow or because the internet is a wierd place you may still be able to see it all depending on where you live!

The Electric Prunes & Reckless Eric at The Bell

Get ready for a slice of Californian psychedelic prune based sound scapes!

The 60s group the Electric Prunes reformed in 2001 and are back making fantastic music. On Saturday September 3rd they will be playing at the Bell Inn, Ash (near Yeovil).

Also guesting at this show is the infamous Wreckless Eric. Now if you are like me, you knew the name but couldn't place where from. Why is Tuesday called Tuesday?

If you ever wondered why Tuesday is called Tuesday then this post is for you. If you didn't, then don't read it!

The word "Tuesday" is derived from a Norse religious tradition. Tyr or Tiw was the Norse God of War. When the Germanic Angles and Saxon's invaded England in the 500's they suplanted a culture that had been heavily influenced by Rome for several hundred years.

The day, Tuesday, had already been named for the Roman God of War, Martius (notice in French, Italian, and Spanish - the word for Tuesday is still derivative of the Roman God - Mardi, Martedi and Martes - respectively).

When the Germanic tribes conquered England, they laid their own lexicon over that of the Roman's so that the Norse God of War now supplanted the Roman God of War (after all the Norse God was obviously more potent). Thus they called the day of the God of War tiwesdaeg.

MFA 2005: The results!

We had a message in from Tom Toomey, Chairman and Founder of Music For Africa today. Great news about this year's Montacute event, his words are below.

Hi there, just to let you know that we made £12000 clear profit on the weekend at Montacute House! !!!!!!

There are still a couple of cheques to come in but I have it on good authority from Angie my bookkeeper that this is the bottom line figure. so, THANKS a million to everyone who helped....seriously THANKS once again! It's always a tricky time for me wondering wether or not I will make or break but once again it was a HUGE success and the WEATHER was with us thank God.

Next years event will be 14th/15th July 2006 at Montacute House and I will be having a gathering at my house on Sunday 11th Sept from 3pm thru to the evening to thank everyone who helped at this years concert ( bring a bottle and some food...etc).

The Charity is going from strength to strength and we are now able to supply a teacher who has been trained by MFA for the last 5 years to start a new project in Capetown.This means we have trained up and CREATED another job for a school leaver/music teacher from scratch.We were approached via the net by a Church minister there and we will supply 10 classical guitars and transport and they will pay Franks wages. The project will be on a trial run for 3 months.This will start sometime in September and I shall be going to see the progress of all my students sometime in 2006.We have also found a brilliant classical guitar teacher( to grade 8 standard ) who lives 2 hours drive from our school in South Africa .Sue will be taking our best students under her wing and entering them for grades this year.I have been looking for someone like her for years!

So that's it so far, I will keep you all updated periodically.

Stunning Sunny Monday

Yes it's another wonderful Monday! What you mean you're not enjoying it beacuse you're back at work? Oh...

Well today is VJ Day or Victory over Japan, that celebrates the end of the second world war.
Events are taking place all over the local area, of particular interest may be the events at the Fleet Air Arm museum at Yeovilton.

The Fleet Air Arm Museum near Yeovil, Somerset, were awarded a £8,790 grant to help commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of WW2. They will have a free entry on VJ Day, Monday August 15, with a series of events aimed at celebrating the end of the war, including entertainment from the era, displays and refreshments. Throughout the day musicians will set the tone with wartime songs and music. The BBC's People's War team will be on hand to record poignant memories of visitors.

Graham Mottram, Museum Director, said: "To many sailors and naval aircrew, VJ Day was more important than VE Day. War in the Pacific began with the Japanese aircraft carrier attack on Pearl Harbour and the Allied fight-back was hugely dependent upon the carrier air power of the British and American Navies. With free entry to the museum made possible by this generous grant, anyone who wishes to be part of our commemoration will be able to join us, and we hope they will."

Love costs!
Men spend an average of 1,426 pounds on their partner during the first six months of a relationship, including 970 pounds on drinks and dinners, 148 pounds on presents and 63 pounds on taxis, flowers and chocolates. (Are we mad?)

Women, on the other hand, spend 740 pounds over the same period. (Obviously not quite so mad!)

Three percent of men even claimed to have paid their new partner's gym membership.

But once a relationship has passed the 12-month barrier, men's spending drops off to an average 987 pounds, while that of women increases ever so slightly to 784 pounds. (We think that's for the year.)

Little surprise then that most relationships fold within 12 months. It's a bloody expensive game!

Holiday Disasters
If you were planning to go on holiday on a BA flight today, boy are you in the mire! What a crappy thing to happen! All flights grounded until tomorrow. On the other hand think about those 800 catering workers who were sacked...not good for them either.

What about the Bristol Balloon Fiesta Nightglow?
The first night of the Fiesta is famous for the breathtaking spectacle that is the Night Glow, attracting crowds of around 100,000 people.

As night falls on the first day of the Fiesta, people of all ages flock to watch the striking Night Glow. Some 30 tethered balloons illuminate like giant light bulbs using their liquid gas burners, creating magical patterns against the darkening night sky. Under coded instructions via radio communication, the pilots create a variety of dazzling effects from only three main commands: burn, flicker and flash. These astounding sequences are set to a special music mix which was produced last year by GWR Fm. An impressive array of sequences are expertly choreographed to the rhythm of the music and the atmospheric display leads to a dramatic finale - a magnificent firework display, put together by Bristol-based Skyburst. S.Korean man dies after 50 hours of computer games
SEOUL (Reuters) - A South Korean man who played computer games for 50 hours almost non-stop died of heart failure minutes after finishing his mammoth session in an Internet cafe, authorities said on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old man, identified only by his family name Lee, had been playing on-line battle simulation games at the cybercafe in the southeastern city of Taegu, police said.

Lee had planted himself in front of a computer monitor to play on-line games on August 3. He only left the spot over the next three days to go to the toilet and take brief naps on a makeshift bed, they said.

"We presume the cause of death was heart failure stemming from exhaustion," a Taegu provincial police official said by telephone.

Lee had recently quit his job to spend more time playing games, the daily JoongAng Ilbo reported after interviewing former work colleagues and staff at the Internet cafe.

After he failed to return home, Lee's mother asked his former colleagues to find him. When they reached the cafe, Lee said he would finish the game and then go home, the paper reported.

He died a few minutes later, it said.
South Korea, one of the most wired countries in the world, has a large and highly developed game industry.

Here's a great site that strips images, tables, and css info from pages to leave you with a scaled down, mobile-friendly version of the same page. What's even nicer is that if you make an account with them (free), it remembers every url you type in, and lists them below the input field.

So subsequent visits to the site will have a nice list of links for you, saving you the typing. You can remove any of the urls from that list whenever you want too. Perfect for anyone with a mobile device!

Wicked Wednesday & VJ Day events

VJ Day Celebrations at Yeovilton Fleet Air Arm Museum
All this week up to and including Monday 15th there will be a range of events happening every day at the Fleet Air Arm Museum.

DAILY LECTURES
Daily lectures given by the Museum's Curator and Director examining the events of each day of the last week of the war culminating with VJ Day on 15 August.

Every day at 3.00pm, all visitors old enough to recall the war first hand will be encouraged to visit the museum and share their experiences and reminisce in our Warnefords restaurant area, which will be transformed to reflect the decor and celebrations of the day 60 years earlier.

A flick through some of the wartime recipe books illustartes the unusual recipies of the day including "Somerset Rook Pie with Figgy Paste". It requires 'Six rooks, weak stock, pieces of fat bacon cut in chunks with salt and pepper to taste'.

The Museum's Catering Manager, Kevin Mansfield has been set the challenge of producing a wartime menu based on the available ingredients and rations of the day - although being a keen ornithologist and vegetarian, he has refused to put Rook Pie on the menu!

Marine Theatre, Lyme Regis video

We recently went to see the Marine Theatre in Lyme REgis to research an article for the September edition of Suited and Booted.

It is a very intriging place that was originally built as a bath house for sea water bathing.

Now of course it plays host to bands famous and not so famous as well as holding events a fairs of various kinds throughout the year.

A German handbook has set out to bridge the gulf between the sexes by explaining that what men say is not necessarily what they really mean.

The Langenscheidt publishing group, best known for its respected foreign language dictionaries, says tests have shown men utter about half as many words as women in a typical day so it is imperative they are understood.

When out shopping, "that doesn't suit you" means "it is too expensive", and "buy that one" means "I want to go home", said co-author Susanne Froehlich.

The guide's female authors hope they can help solve some couples' lack of communication -- the sixth most popular reason given for divorce in Germany.

They also list ten questions women should never ask men as men will not understand the logic -- including "would you still love me if I was fatter and uglier?", "why do you love me?", and "what are you thinking?".

Froehlich pre-empts accusations of sexism saying the book is light-hearted, that not all men display all listed traits, and that she herself is happily married.

Last year Langenscheidt published a male-authored guide to help men understand the subtext of phrases uttered by women.

Stones go online

Stones release album songs online

The Rolling Stones have released songs from their new album five weeks before its official release.

Three new tracks from the album, A Bigger Bang, will be available to buy online.
It is the first time a major act has made album tracks available in such a way, according to the band.

A Bigger Bang - the Stones' first studio album since 1997's Bridges to Babylon - is set for release on September 5.

The tracks available to download are Streets of Love, Rough Justice and Back of My Hand.
The band - Sir Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood - embark on a world tour on August 21.

The tour starts in the USA before moving on to Canada, South America, the Far East and Europe, ending in summer 2006. (Providing the old bones can take the strain!)

Not quite live but...disco comes to Sparkford!

Musicman Entertainments has sent us some information about their over 25s disco at the Sparkford Inn.

It now has a regular slot on the first Saturday of the month and the next one will be this Saturday, the 6th. It starts at 8pm and runs through till midnight. The July disco night was the best attended ever, with over 200 enthusiastic and happy people on the dance floor.

The music is provided by the 'Musicman' Disco Roadshow with DJ Mike Nunnerley, a long time favourite at Bumbles nightclub in Bournemouth. He plays all styles of music from '60s up to the present day.

Very Naughty Sony!

This special day has been christened St Ebeneezer's Day (a very movable feast that seems to happen earlier each year.)

Od couple's long walk to Venice
We found this news item on the Press Association web site and since it's local...
An adventurous couple from a village called Odcombe are preparing to set off on an epic 2,000-mile round trip to Venice - on foot.

Chris Worledge, 34, and his girlfriend, Michele Roberts, 33, who live in the village in Somerset, have given up their well-paid jobs to follow in the footsteps of local hero Thomas Coryate - the man widely regarded as being the world's first travel writer.

The eccentric explorer toured Europe in 1608 and chronicled his adventures in Coryate's Crudities, three years later.

Alternatively take the Easy Jet flight from Bristol and enjoy a ride on the canal boats a couple hours later, mmmm. Well good luck any way!

It's August!

Can you believe it's August?

The weekend is here at last, it's not actually raining at the moment so it's all looking good!

Lennon Lyrics
A handwritten lyric sheet for "All You Need is Love" used by John Lennon in 1967 was sold for 600,000 pounds at an auction in London on Thursday, organisers said.
The manuscript was part of a pop memorabilia sale featuring clothes, paintings and musical instruments from Lennon, Jimi Hendrix and others.

The "All You Need Is Love" lyric sheet was used by Lennon during a television performance by the Beatles and could be seen on film footage dropping to the floor after the song was performed, said a spokesman for auctioneers Cooper Owen.

A girl working for the BBC at the time retrieved the manuscript from beneath Lennon's music stand. She provided a letter of authenticity for Thursday's sale.

Can you imagine how she feels today? One scrap of A5 paper is now worth £600k...

Ugly Men Called In For Drinks Firms Ads
Drinks companies have been ordered to use uglier men in their advertising campaigns.The Advertising Standards Authority believes "balding" and "paunchy" men would be less likely to encourage women to drink to achieve social success.The new advertising code stresses that links must not be made between alcohol and seduction.

A campaign for popular sparkling drink Lambrini has become the first to fall foul of the new rules.

The Authority objected to a poster which showed three women "hooking" a slim, young man in a parody of a fairground game.

The industry regulator instructed the firm: "We would advise that the man in the picture should be unattractive - ie overweight, middle-aged, balding etc.

"In its current form we consider that the ad is in danger of implying that the drink may bring sexual/social success, because the man in question looks quite attractive and desirable to the girls.

"If the man was clearly unattractive, we think that this implication would be removed from the ad."

Lambrini owner John Halewood said the Authority should not be in the business of defining who was and was not unattractive enough to star in ads.

He said: "It makes some very understandable rulings to encourage sensible drinking but we're not sure they're qualified to decide for the nation who's sexy and who's not.

"Sexual attraction is happily one of the few things in life that can't be governed."

Of course if we saw how the man looked the morning after a night out that might be different. How is it that sometimes, someone who looked so good last night looks sooo bad the following morning? The power of alcohol!

Once the beer goggles are on everyone is attractive!
