Is your old PC making you miserable at work?
Dealing with the frustrations of ageing and unreliable office computers contributes to workers' unhappiness and more sick-leave, a survey showed on Wednesday.

A poll conducted by Tickbox.net of over 2,700 European office workers from the UK, France and Germany found that workplace dissatisfaction increased significantly with the age of computer equipment.

British and French respondents said working on outdated computers was the most irritating aspect of office life.

Editor's thought
Really?! We thought that lazy incompetent, socially maladjusted bosses were responsible for most of the work based grumbles. This sounds like another survey by people who would like you to buy a new PC in the vain hope that it will make the workers happy. What a load of old bollocks!

Have a fun day!

Tuesday...it's a bit quiet!

It is safe to say that tonight things are fairly quiet on the musical front.

Kathryn Tickell @ Brewhouse Theatre, Taunton

Have you heard about the latest hit CD?
No it is not something by the Zutons but is in fact multiplication tables set to music!

Brothers, Peter and Christopher Webb, both teachers, came up with the idea of setting times tables to rock music and rap rhythms to make them easy and fun to learn. The CDs have become so popular that Peter and Christopher have now left teaching to focus on their new business.

Tables Disco is already used in over 10,000 UK schools and it has sold more than 100,000 copies. “People think that in this age of computers, kids don’t need to know their tables, but what a disadvantage you’d be at,” explained Peter. “You’d be cheated in the simplest of transactions if you didn’t know the price of 6 oranges at 7p each.”All the tables up to 12 are included and each table is set to a different music style, each one being fully tested before one can move onto the next.

If you want your copy the contact: www.tablesdisco.com or send £9.49 to: Sound Ideas, 117 Athelstan Road, Southampton, SO19 4DG. Tel: 02380 333405

Sherborne Jazz- Last event of season on May 13th

We had the message come in from the Sherborne Jazz Club

Saturday 13th May 2006 @ The Plume of Feathers @ 8:00pm
07980 122880

This superb international band is the last gig of this season at Sherborne Jazz Club

Yaniv Nachum Quartet

The visit of the Yaniv Nachum Quartet from Amsterdam will turn out to be, for many, the highlight of the season at Sherborne Jazz Club. In conjunction with The BeBop Club in Bristol we are presenting this truly superb international band in the UK as part of their European tour.

In short: this is a gig not to be missed! Based in Amsterdam, the Yaniv Nachum Quartet showcases the multiple talents of Israeli saxophonist Yaniv Nachum, German pianist Franz von Chossy, bassist Sean Fasciani from the USA, and Finnish drummer Anssi Lehtivuori. Together they form a wonderfully cohesive group of virtuoso musicians who, when they visited Sherborne last year, performed some of the finest jazz ever heard at the Club.

The band play almost exclusively their own material, consisting of graceful, thought-provoking ballads, and soaring faster numbers – all performed with the innate musical communication and expressive democracy that comes from years of having played together.Yaniv’s experience as both student and teacher at the Manhattan School of Music is clearly evident from the skill and maturity of his saxophone playing, and his devotion to his craft has brought about a most wonderful tone and the ability to improvise beautifully and meticulously at speed, whilst sensitively and emotionally in the ballad.

Playing along side US heavyweights such as Chris Potter, Mike Manieri and Slide Hampton certainly cannot have failed to contribute to Yaniv’s musical ascension, and Yaniv is actively engaged in passing on some of this wisdom as a teacher of jazz improvisation at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and we understand that he may soon take up a post teaching the Master's degree at the Manhattan School of Music.

Check out www.yanivnachum.com.

Entrance is £12 for non-members, £10 for members and £7 for students (with ID) and accompanied under 18’s. Please pay on the door.

For further information visit http://www.sherbornejazz.org.uk/ or call 07980 122880 (Please make a note of this new number).Doors open at 8.00pm with the music starting around 8.30pm -8:45pm.

American President best bits

According to Reuters News Agency US President George W. Bush told a German newspaper his best moment in more than five years in office was catching a big perch in his own lake.

"You know, I've experienced many great moments and it's hard to name the best," Bush told weekly Bild am Sonntag when asked about his high point since becoming president in January 2001.

"I would say the best moment of all was when I caught a 7.5 pound (3.402 kilos) perch in my lake," he told the newspaper in an interview published on Sunday.

Bush said the worst moment was September 11 when hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Centre in New York and the Pentagon in Washington.

"In such a situation it takes a while before one understands what is happening," Bush said. "I would say that this was the hardest moment, once I had the real picture before my eyes."
Because Bild could not immediately furnish English quotes, Bush's comments were translated from the German. The paper said the White House planned to release an authorised English version of the interview on Monday.

It's good to know that the leader of the 'free' world loves nothing more than a big fish!

Saturday events & things

It is one hell of a busy night tonight with live music happening all over the place!

A rum do
A team of builders who found a barrel of rum in a house they were renovating got a nasty surprise when they drank the contents - there was a corpse in the barrel.

The workers in Szeged, Hungary, made the grim discovery as they tried to move the barrel after drinking the contents!

Police think the body of the man had been shipped back from Jamaica 20 years ago by his wife in the barrel of rum in order to avoid the cost and paperwork of an official return. The wife has since died and the man has now had a proper funeral.

New band & Thursday music

Out of the ashes....
While they were around, we were fans of X-Teller; they wrote their own music and performed it with some style. Sadly as happens with many bands they imploded and split into two. One of those halves has teemed up with a vocalist and guitar player to form Wavestate.

The vocalist is Mel, who some will remember from Orchis; another local band that we rated highly.

So what do they sound like? Very good! You can listen for yourself by going to their page on myspace. http://www.myspace.com/wavestate

They have their first gigs booked at the Bournemouth Live event happening on 25th June and you can find out more about that by visiting http://www.bournemouthlive.info/pages/index.html.

Bournemouth live is a huge event and there lots of great acts playing, take a look at their web site.

Leaking Chilli Peppers not happy
According to a report by Reuters; The Red Hot Chili Peppers have lashed out at a music pirate who leaked the funk-rock band's upcoming album onto the Internet, and urged fans not to download it illegally.

The band's spokeswoman said on Wednesday the offender was being tracked down. The group's highly anticipated first studio album in four years, "Stadium Arcadium," is still on track to go on sale on Tuesday via Warner Music Group Inc.s Warner Bros. Records, she said.

In a rambling open letter, the band's bass player, Michael "Flea" Balzary, said he and his colleagues would be heartbroken if fans downloaded the album beforehand. "For people to just steal a poor sound quality version of it for free because some a--hole stole it and put it on the internet is sad to me," he said.

Or just possibly the band are concerned that the downloads will hurt their sales. Ooh we are feeling cynical today!

Are you up for a charity gig in July?

Ian Uren of the acoustic guitar duo The Jongleurs is organising a charity event on the 22nd July this year at 'The Coach & Horses Inn' in Corscombe for the 'Macmillan Unit', (cancer relief).

The band are looking for two other bands to help them out and play at this event. Ideally they would like one to be a Jazz band and the other to be an Irish folk/rock band.

If you feel that your band has something to offer for this event then please get in touch with Ian directly. His email address is iancuren at hotmail.com (replace 'at' with the @ symbol)

At the moment they have 'The Rhythm Junkies', themselves and a disco on board but they do need two more bands to fill the day, to make it a rip roaring success.

The event will start at 12 noon and run until 12pm.

Even more Crewkerne music!

A. J., the landlord of the Swan in Crewkerne and Mike Shaw have got together to start up a fortnightly Sunday afternoon Jam Session commencing, on April 23rd 2006. (This will be subject to the venue having completed sound proofing measures, as mentioned in the
March issue of Suited and Booted.)

They hope to start at 3:00pm and will be winding up by approx. 5:30pm,(definitely no later than 6:00!!). These sessions will then be run every alternate Sunday.(God, good health, the weather and whatever else??), permitting.

They would like to get as many people as possible interested in coming along to join in, especially performers of all and any genre/level, ( bring your own instruments).

There will be P.A. and mic's provided and a core of resident musicians if backing is required.

But this WILL be an "open mic/jam session". The success of this event will of course depend on the support given.

If you require any further information or have any queries then Mike can be contacted by emailing metamick@mail.adsl4less.com

More music in Crewkerne

Mike Shaw has been in touch to say that he is running an "open mic" night at
Oscar's Wine Bar every Sunday evening.

These sessions will take place from 8:00pm until closing time and will hopefully run in a similar way to the well known Jam sessions held at the Antelope in Crewkerne on
Thursdays.

It appears that Crewkerne is no longer the music wilderness it had become.
All are welcome, especially any fellow musicians, so come on down to Oscars for a sing along.

Jazz in Sherborne this Saturday

Theo Travis Quartet plays at the Plume on 22nd April

We had this message from Sherborne Jazz.

The superb season of contemporary and modern jazz at sherborne jazz continues on Saturday 22nd April at 8:00pm at The Plume of Feathers with a performance by the highly talented saxophonist and flautist, Theo Travis.

Theo inspired the sherbornejazz audience when he played here last season with John Etheridge. He's a firm favourite in London's jazz scene and can be heard regularly at the capital’s premier jazz hot spots, and we are very lucky to have tempted him west for a night of top grade jazz at sherbornejazz .

Theo will be complimented by Andy Hague’s Bristol-based trio with Jim Blomfield piano, Dave Goodier double bass, and Andy Hague on drums.

Please note our new telephone number for enquiries and bookings: 07980 122880

Theo has made a name for himself for his soulful playing style and fine compositions and, whilst jazz is undoubtedly where he feels most at home, but his musical experience has benefited widely from forays in to both the world of classical music and into rock. Theo studied classical music at Manchester University and, in 1999 joined the legendary rock group Gong, with whom he toured world-wide and co-wrote the album Zero to Infinity.

The list of musicians with whom Theo has played alongside reads like a who’s who of British jazz, with stints along side Jim Mullen, Slim Gaillard, Dick Heckstall-Smith and Tony Coe, to name but a few. Plaudits have included nomination for ‘rising star’ at the 1996 and 1998 British Jazz Awards, and praise as being “one of the very best young tenor players of this or any jazz generation in Britain” by trumpeter and presenter Digby Fairweather.

In July 1994, Theo appeared on a one-hour interview on New York radio station WKCR-FM. He was also commissioned to write new music for the 1926 Hitchcock silent film The Lodger which was performed live in September 1996 as part of the Derby Metro's 100 Years of Cinema Festival. Theo was acknowledged by Penguin author Nicholas Royle as one of the inspirations behind his novel Saxophone Dreams.

Entrance is £12 for non-members, £10 for members and £7 for students (with ID) and accompanied under 18’s. Please pay on the door. For further information visit www.sherbornejazz.org.uk or call 07980 122880. See also www.theotravis.comDoors open at 8.00pm with the music starting around 8.30pm - 8:45pm.
